Members TheBoatCanDream
I'm looking at the martin website right now. I would expect the necks to be either mahogany or rosewood, but on the specs I've read through so far, they say "select hardwood". Why aren't they more specific? Members gitnoob
Nobody uses rosewood for necks. "Select hardwood" means mahogany or Spanish cedar. They used to use mahogany exclusively, but it's getting harder (and more expensive) to source, so they use whatever they can. Now you can ask about "wings." Members DeepEnd
As gitnoob mentioned, there aren't any rosewood necks out there. Mahogany or related wood (i.e., nato) is typical but you'll occasionally find maple used on some guitars. I'm not aware of any Martins that use maple necks though. (Doesn't necessarily mean they aren't out there, just means I don't know about them. )
Members kwakatak
FWIW LMI sells rosewood neck blanks so somebody's using it to make necks. As for "select hardwood" that does not include stratabond.

Since they use, what's in and since they can't foresee what gets what, they just say "select hardwood".Soundise it's said not to make any difference.
