Members Mike_E_McGee
I know, it's a darksider, but I know we've got knowledgeable builders here. My friend's Dad passed recently leaving my buddy with this feller: That headstock's looking pretty gnarly. Any advice on scrubbing it up or at least exercising the odor?? Members Stackabones
Not sure what to do. Just wanted to say that I had one of these when I was a teenager. Even had the case with the built-in amp. Wish I'd never got rid of it.
Members jamesp
I'd try soap and water first. When that didn't work I'd move up to quick swipes with Everclear. Then I'd probably try Toluene. If a quick wipe on, wipe off w/ that didn't work I'd give up and call it mojo. IME the only thing that gets rid of the smell is fresh air, sunlight and time. Members katopp
If it is a Poly laquer, you can youse the heavy stuff, but if the Poly is wrecked like that, it's mojo'ed.If it is Nitro, it's mojo'ed to the wood.
Members Grant Harding
Definitely don't do anything major. I'd use a micro-fibre cloth and a gentle cleaner like Meguiars Quick Detailer. That mojo is like a piece of his Dad.
Members roughtrade
You might put a sachet of cloves in the case with it.
Members FretFiend.
Try the weakest (and safest for the finsh) cleaners first, and then move to the stronger ones if needed. TEST EACH IN AN INCONSPICUOUS SPOT TO ASSURE IT DOESN'T DAMAGE THE FINISH. A good thorough cleaning with one of these will go a long way towards eliminating the odor too.1. Dish soap.2. Purple Power, Mean Green, Simple Green, Greased Lightning, Formula 409, etc. 3. Turpentine/mineral spirits.4. Lacquer thinner/acetone. If none of those work, learn to live with the stains. Members fastblueheeler
I don't think they used poly back in the 80's so my guess is it's nitro. I'd try soap and water then Naphtha (lighter fluid). Nothing stronger, no lacquer thinner. Stack's right, those are great guitars. I bought one for my son back in the early 90's. Short scale, nice neck, nice sounding pick ups, USA made and built like a tank. Me, I'd just clean it up with soap and water and leave it alone. Members Grant Harding
The MOST important part is the microfibre cloth IMO. It'll work with whatever solvent you choose, to mechanically lift the gunk out. Nothing like them.
