please note the most important piece of equipment in that studio. The Funk Logic DD-301 Digilog Dynamicator.

I never really understood having a 96 channel console when the MPC2000 only has 8 outs (when expanded) and one of the only times you record something live, it's one vocalist with one microphone. He'd be fine with an MBox, if you ask me.

LOL!!!

That's {censored}ing ignorant man. He obviously uses much more than an MPC2000. As a matter of fact, he doesn't use an MPC2000 at all, he uses an MPC4000, and then only for drums. What about all the other instruments that are being used? What about each individual vocal track (lead, backup, adlib, harmony, etc)? What about when he's producing other people's music and he needs the extra channels?

Alright then....I didnt really catch the sarcasm, but the truth is that that kind of ignorance is alive and well on these forums. Maybe having a huge console is a big overkill for most situations, especially for rap music, but I doubt that anyone would spend that much money on something they don't really need. Granted the Doc can afford to blow a couple extra grands on some extra channels, but I wouldn't be so quick to judge.

Truce. :D

which no doubt explains why a good deal of rappers buy bentleys that they'll never drive more than an hour, total.

somebody buy these guys a goddamned guitar and an elvis costello record, already.

Man, if you really believe that all these rappers buy bentleys, then you're pretty gullible. It's mostly for show, for image. I know enough big time rappers that lease Benzes as their cars....

Oh man, can't tell you how much I despise Costello. But that's the beauty of music, there's something for everyone. :)

I have to thank Dre for quoting George Clinton on all his early stuff with Snoop. I love P-Funk and I might never have been driven to seek them out if not for those early hits "bow-wow-wow-yippy-yo-yippy-yeah". Awesome.

I have much more respect for someone like Dre who pulls samples from all over the place and combines them into something new versus others who note for note sample an entire song and change the lyrics.

Plus, being who he is, the 96 channel console is probably more for *bling bling* than it is for recording tracks. That board is tight!

You guys watch way too many videos. Dre is a millionaire. Do you really think he got there by spending thousands of dollars on equipment he doesn't need? There are a ton of synths, instruments, and effects in there. Maybe he doesn't use 96 channels at a time, but if I had the money, every instrument would have its own dedicated channel(s) so I'm not constantly switching plugs and changing settings. As a matter of fact, that is what I do (on a much smaller scale) I have a 12 track mixer though I can only record 2 tracks simultaneously.

Whatever criticism you may have for pop rappers, you cannot deny that many of these guys are excellent businessmen. If you're believing that they are idiots that spend ALL their money on flashy things, then you're just falling for the illusion. How tied to your stereotypes do you have to be to look at a producer who's worth millions and has held onto that worth for years and assume he doesn't know how to handle money AND he doesn't know how to buy equipment?

It's funny...the stuff that comes up whenever you mention anybody that's even remotely associated with Hip Hop or Rap, much less a legendary figure like the good Doctor. 'Cause I bet if you said that studio belonged to Garth Brooks, these same people wouldn't be saying, "why would he have a 96 channel console when all he's doing is recording drums and pedal steel guitars?" And like A_Str8 just said, it's assuming the guy AND his team of accomplished industry recognized producers, engineers, and musicians don't know what they're doing.

As far as flashy, I believe it was Dre who bucked the trend of having a bunch of cars by getting rid of all but three. He literally asked himself why he needed a whole lot of cars, and answered by saying he didn't. So he kept only what he felt was essential for he and his family. That doesn't sound like an unreasonable man. Besides, who's to tell him what he needs and doesn't need in his studio?

BTW, Sty1es, thanks for sharing the pics! Very cool!

Peace

Disclaimer: I'm not "into" Hip Hop... it's "not my bag baby". :) And I AM into Costello... to each their own. :)

Dre obviously has a bunch of money, and he's obviously got a handle on the business side of things. I agree that he'd be unlikely to buy a board that was away more than he needed just to throw cash around...

But does he actually NEED a 96 channel board for his projects? I have no idea... but maybe he does. Maybe he doesn't need that many channels for tracking, but does need them for mixdowns. And even if he doesn't, he might rent the room out to other people (and possibly people working in other genres), and THEY might see that as a requirement for THEIR sessions. Or maybe he needs that for his flim / soundtrack work... that's notorious for gobbling channels on the board.

Maybe he doesn't need that many channels but he likes the automation and / or the sound of the board. Or maybe it's just to "impress clients". Any or all of those could be legit reasons (IMO) for him to have that board, and I'm not going to argue with the man's gear decisions any more than I would argue anyone else's gear decisions. Hey, it's his money and his preferences... :)

Thanks for the pics. The drool shorted out my keyboard at work so I switched it with an unsuspecting coworker.

LOL, *MY* studio consists of my laptop, Mbox, and MIDI Controllers :) The studio I work at is pretty cool, you can see some outdated pics at www.runyonave.com, if you click on Area51. We've done alot since those pics were taken, and there really isnt much in the way of gear pics. I'll let my boss know that he needs to update it :)

He's got quite a few synths and equipment, and as I mentioned before, he's got a "stable" of musicians that he uses to start up grooves and things like that, so in either case, it's not just him and a drum machine.

And he doesn't just chase the money, either, as he turned down quite a lot of money to produce Michael Jackson (I believe he said it was too much hassle, or too many people coming around, or something like that).
