Avril Lavigne's Fanbase.

Avril Lavigne exploded with 'Complicated', marketed as the 'bad ass rock' to preteens who had no idea what 'bad ass rock' actually was. School boys had crushes on her and school girls felt like she was in tune with her sense of alienation and 'uniqueness.' Ultimately, she disputably appealed to the insecure kids on the playground.

Now, however, she is something different. The {censored} is going on? 14 year old boys may still fancy her, in fact it's clearly encouraged, but what of the teenage girls? Would the same market of insecure girls still like her? I noticed a fan on the youtube also had videos of Britney on her profile - is Avril in the same category as her now? (it's pretty clear that teenage girls are pretty significant in terms of buying records.)

To me, it seems like they're trying to make her appeal to the girls who don't care that she's pseudo-alternative and just market a sense of minx-like fun. But what about her old fanbase? Are they still trying to appeal? Or are they trying to appeal to the more fun-loving girls who shop at hot topic?

Has Avril's niche market moved, shrunk or grown?

What does everyone think about this?

It's easy to understand. The suits running the company told her to change to become more 'mainstream' and 'mass appeal'. It's what they always do when a product stops selling or loses demographics. And make no mistake, Avril Levigne is every bit as much a manufactured product as jeans or shoes or Scotch tape or video games.

Completely agree! It all has to do with the money.

This is a really weird video. This sounds like a song written more for those recently divorced women who tend to go overboard with the second wave of adolescent angst some of them seem to experience. Doesn't seem directed at teenagers at all. And if I were a guy, I would not find this video appealing at all. Chasing after some chick who's trying to blow you off and is otherwise just toying with you? What?!

When there isn't any real steak; Sell sizzle.

The real shame is that the Parasites will use this type of promotion to justify not supporting any artist .....

First kill the goose by refusing to feed it , then blame it for dying and not giving anymore gold eggs .

Just like trying to gain traction with tripe like the above vid ; It's pathetic........

And the amount of product placement was pretty wild, too. There was Sony, Vaio, and some clothing line that just happens to be Avril's.

hmmm...let's see...

she is signed to RCA...

which is a subsidiary of...

Sony...will wonders never cease...

I, for one, came at 0:30

LOLZ! now thats funny right there. I mean, she IS attractive.

But seriously, everything else about her, the music, this video....just...everything.....violates every part of my being. It takes a big steaming pile right on the alter of everything that is good great and righteous about rock and roll.

It makes we want to invent a time-machine and dump her in the hotel room with circa 1986 Motley Crue, so she can find out what "partying like a rockstar" really means. She'd be toast in 37 seconds. Terrified and completely out of her element.

It's grown IMO. Like Blue Strat said, she has moved from the emo folky sound she had early on, through a phase of trying to be punk-pop, and now to mainstream pop with an edge, like P!NK. I saw an interview with her the other night that hinted she was struggling with her label to make the record she wanted.

I think she appeals to pre-teens up to 30-something mothers who refuse to grow up. It's a catchy song with an infectious hook and lyrics that I predict will be pretty successful. It's only been up a week on Youtube and has nearly 4 million views.

I just looked it up. The album doesn't come out until March, but here's the info on the single:

On January 19, 2011 "What the Hell" made its debut on the US Billboard Hot 100 at number thirteen and on the US Billboard Hot Digital Songs at number six, with digital sales of over 163,000 units. The following week, What the Hell fell to number 31 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number 22 on Hot Digital Songs with register sales of 77,000.

Apparently, she had it available as a free download on her Facebook page for 48 hours , so that surely killed a lot of her sales.

P.S. Now her video has close to 5 million views.

It's a horrible video, I used to have a GF that acted like that... these days, half way through the video I would have said 'go to hell' and walked off.

The stuff at the beginning is basically the video shop soft porn from my youth, there's product placement everywhere, and to top it all off the worse fake sounding production ever.

Avril is the latest in a long line of Canadian pop/country princesses...remember Joni Mitchell (to her credit, she managed to defy the labels and find her own style)? Karen Carpenter? Anne Murray? Alanis Morissette? Sara MacLachlan? k.d. lang? Celine Dion? Shania Twain? Nelly Furtado? and of course, Justin Bieber ;)
