bought a house 3/26.

spent 2 months rehabbing it.

we redid the basement to turn it into a small tracking room, and a control room.

i also use the control room to teach guitar.

Man, you've got some really nice gear. That's a good looking studio too. I checked out your link, can't wait to see the finished product.

Is that laminate (floating) floor or hard wood? I'm about to install laminate in my "tracking" room.

the fatheads made for GREAT room mics!

i hadn't used them for that previously.

plus, we had things sounding great, pre eq, compression, processing. a lot of goods to play with!

i was happy.

I need several of those "mic / pedal cabinets".
:D
I'd like to do something similar to that for guitars too...

Very nice setup Greg - it's really coming together! :phil:

i would love to have something like that for guitars.

not in the cards yet.

this pedal/mic case was built into the wall by the home's previous owner.

he was a wood worker.

there are a dozen little cases all around the house.

this one was a big sell point.

well made too. can't hear a single rattle, even when the svt is blaring.

i'm grateful for the other cabinet too:

well.....

this was a pretty basic setup.

just a combo of close and room mics.

took some time trying to find a way to really hammer out some of the bleed, and phase issues. we got it.

k- beta91 -> EH 12ay7

k- outside -ksm44 -> eh 12ay7

sn top- beyer 201 -> digimax fs

sn btm- 441 -> digimax fs

tom - 421 -> 002

tom- 421 ->002

hh- 451 -> sytek

ride- 451 -> sytek

oh- ksm32 -> sytek

oh- ksm32 -> sytek

mid room- sputnik tube mic -> la610

far room- fathead II -> digimax fs

far room- fathead II -> digimax fs

they play relatively fast, chaotic music.

the drummer is constantly flying.

with the cd references they gave me, i thought close micing everything would be most appropriate. very precise, detailed drum sounds were on their radar.

that being said, i wasn't a fan of the drummers coated skins. :)

felt like they were working against the sound.

Wow thats nuts on the drum mics. I bet you were fighting phase issues. :(

Also if it was me, I would get your traps up asap. Do you have plans for treatment of your control room? That back wall is going to mess with you pretty bad imo.

Thats a great looking setup you have there as well. Lot of top notch gear.

Hey, what kind of shock-mounts are you using on the 421s? It's hard to make them out in the pics.

how much do you charge to record?

i've been cheap or free thus far.

i just moved in, and the studio still isn't finished, so i'm not really shaking down for the cash.

no real phase issues. i was really impressed with what we ended up with.

it was a fun one.

traps are coming. i need to balance it, work on one thing for the house, one thing for the studio. back and forth.

traps are on the list.

Man- what do you do for a living? I wish I had the money to put that much into a studio, ha.

i'm a guitar teacher, and i run a community teen center.

this collection of crap has been accumulated slowly over many years.

they are the $9 LDC shockmounts from musicians friend.

they were a tight fit, but better than the $20 disposable 421 clips.

starting to put up some traps.

we have 8, but 3 are up.

on the back wall.

3 more are going parallel to them, behind the desk/speakers.

(i will be ordering more when this band pays for their session).

then 3 more on the left wall (FRP's), 2 above mix position, and one on the door.

we used those 3M sticky wall hooks on the closet door (pictured).

working great thus far.

they are rated for 5lbs a piece.

let's hope they hold even when a pile of sweaty dirty musicians are in there.

Nice fatboy amp back there. I played one in a studio once. Tried to get the owner to sell it. He wouldn't. Go back a couple of months later and it was gone. I asked about it and he claimed it was acting up. So he sold it to a tech he knew. Still wish he would have at least given me the option. Anywho. everything else looks great also. Can't wait to build my house/studio. :)

it's a true classic amp to me. lives somewhere between a bogner xtc and a mesa recto.

the guy who made them - norb funk - was from northern IL, so there were a few floating around the area.

a local studio had this one years ago.

when they closed the doors, one band who used that amp exclusively, bought it to 'keep it in the family'.

when that guitar player decided he didn't need it anymore, it made it's way into my hands.

what a beastly amp.

Greg, did you build or buy the traps? They look nice. :phil:

i picked these up used!

8 4" ats traps for a couple hundo!

we put up the last few last night.

i'm going to order another for the door, and 2 for above mix position.

the difference thus far is RIDICULOUS.

from here, i have packs of roxul i the garage to make superchunks for the corners.

that's the last phase of treatment.
