Members RockPianoman
This is expensive ($4000 for the color I like) but this would be the one: (Highlander.....there can be only one): http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guita...lectric-guitar Coil taps for single coils, Floyd Rose.....yes....this would be the one.... I would change the tuners out to locking Grovers for fast string changes.... This is very similar to the Alex Lifeson signature model but the tuners on both aren't as good as the Grovers on the Les Paul Standard (how much freakin' money do you have to spend to get decent tuners?) http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guita...ifeson&index=1 If they put coil taps and a Floyd Rose on the Les Paul Custom, I'd pick that one instead.....it's nicer.....I like the little lines they put in the trim around the headstock and body on the Custom.......The gold plating on the Custom isn't a big deal to me and it wears off over time (on the tuners especially)..... I think the Ebony fingerboard on the Custom looks killer.....it's probably a little brighter sounding than the rosewood fingerboard on the Standard because I think Ebony is much harder than rosewood but it looks great.... I think the maple fingerboards on Strats are brighter than the rosewoods for the same reason..... LOCKING GROVERS I'd change the top hats to speed knobs: Floyd Roses stay in tune so good (this is the guitar I bought but maybe someday I'll get the Gibson) mine is the same color as this one....it's pretty much a Les Paul Standard with coil taps and a Floyd Rose. They put Grovers on these...go figure....now I miss the Floyd Rose when I play my other Les Pauls..... It has a set neck (I've seen some Epiphone Les Pauls with bolt on's) Floyd Rose abuse test: I think on the Epiphones it's not real wood you see on the front of the body.....I'm pretty sure it's just a photo of real wood but they're pretty....maybe I'm wrong about this but I think I've heard that before.....one way to know for sure would be to compare two that were the same color....it should be pretty obvious..... This one is a different color than mine....it doesn't look like they have the other color for sale anymore.... I bought mine 2 or 3 years ago: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ENLXVSNF3 I've played some of the cheaper Epiphone Les Pauls..... I didn't like them....some are totally flat and thin like a Gibson Melody Maker.....I wouldn't want one cheaper than a Les Paul Standard....... Gibson Les Paul Studios are nice......they aren't as pretty as the Standards and the Customs but I like them....some of them have a really light colored fingerboard which looks kinda weird but they're nice.... This is pretty cheap for a new Gibson Les Paul Custom but the pearl inlay on the headstock isn't as nice.....they usually cost around $4000 and up new.....the body looks thinner too (I guess it's a "light" version.....less filling)......: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guita...lectric-guitar This is clearly out of my budget (I never liked the 3 humbucker models).....the middle humbucker is right where I pick and I always hit it with my pick and I don't like dark colored guitars because they show every fingerprint and they look filthy when the lights on stage hit them.....same thing with black keyboards....I had an all black Strat once and ended up giving it away to my niece....it was like new and it played and sounded good but it always looked dirty....it had two full sized humbuckers and a three way switch: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-1959...item19ea415d5a The one I gave my niece looked just like this one except the headstock was black too with white lettering.....it was a Squier too....all the hardware including the tuners was black on that one too....I didn't really think about this at the time but I bet that guitar would really look like a piece of crap once the black paint started coming off the hardware everywhere.....I haven't seen it in years..... I live far away from my niece now and I never see her: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fender-Squie...item3ced963b9d

Members RockPianoman
The whammy bars on my Strats stay in tune pretty well if you only do really mellow vibrato with them......the Floyd Rose stays in tune no matter what you do as long as the strings have finished stretching since you put them on..... I can do things with the Floyd Rose that I can't do without it......it's much easier to do vibrato on full chords - especially if the chords use open strings..... Check out how good this Les Paul stays in tune: I set up all my guitars but not Floyd Roses so I had it professionally set up....that was 2 or 3 yearsago and it's still working perfectly....if it turned out to be a problem, I would block it, but it works perfectly.... Now I want a Strat with a Floyd Rose too....someday I'd like to get a Jackson Pro with a Floyd Rose too (those have wonderful fingerboards......they are a real pleasure to play).....the Jackson Pros kinda sound like metal though.....I'm not sure if they would work as good for other styles as the Les Paul and the Strat do (unless I changed the pickups)....maybe they would.....most of my playing on Jackson Pros was when they weren't hooked up to anything but I know they are very popular for metal..... Members Emory
Sweetwater has those for about $450, sunburst only Epiphones. Have actual photos of ones in stock, and each one has different face.... is it veneer or photo? I would guess veneer. Suckers weigh over 9 pounds. Not for this old geezer! Members WRGKMC
I'm more for a Bigsby if you have to use a Tremolo. All that metal using a fulcrum tremolo is going to kill the reason for buying a Paul to begin with which is having a TOM bridge on a solid wood block to get that Les Paul Tone. I'd be worried about it having a generic tone that sounds nothing like a Paul.
Moderators Ratae Corieltauvorum Posted December 19, 2014 Moderators Share Posted December 19, 2014 . I'd be worried about it having a generic tone that sounds nothing like a Paul. Scott Gorham is now a committed user aftre switching to HSS Strats for years, because of the weight problem, he still sounds like Scott Gorham on a LP
Members RockPianoman
My Floyd Rose Les Paul sounds like my other Les Pauls.....my Gibson Les Pauls have better electronics, but they all still sound like Les Pauls Epiphone Les Pauls still capture the sound...you can hear that it's still got the tone here, even with the Floyd Rose....I've never played any trem system that stays in tune better than a Floyd Rose: Epiphone Les Paul versus Gibson Les Paul guitar review
Members RockPianoman
I like the feel of my Strats better, but the Les Pauls easily win for tone
Members Bucksstudent
It's not a Gibson' date=' but it plays good and sounds good.....but Epiphone Les Pauls don't really feel the same to me....[/quote'] That's probably mental, then. There are good Epiphone Les Pauls like the Custom that in many cases can sound better than their Gibson counterpart. I've played several bad Gibsons. All of my six string electrics are Epiphones at this time, and they surpass the Gibsons I once owned in every facet. I'm not saying Epiphones are better than Gibsons, but each one is unique and you have to find the guitar that suits you no matter the name on the headstock. Members RockPianoman
Is that a Casino? John Lennon played those a lot.....(P-90's ?)Pretty guitar......Jeff Lynne likes P-90's on his Les Pauls....Jeff Lynne plays Telecasters a lot.....I never liked the feel of Telecasters compared to Strats..... Epiphones just feel more "plastic" to me than the Gibsons.....it's kinda hard to describe I've seen bad Gibsons too.....my brother bought a beautiful used Gibson Les Paul Custom but had to return it because it was screwed up and no matter what he did, he couldn't get the intonation right.....the neck was really screwed up bad and he's exceptionally good at setting them up..... One piece necks give more sustain, but they warp easier...... It's kinda funny but when performers break their guitars against the stage, the Les Paulsare pretty tough.....with Strats, the necks break right off My brother had a Guild electric that was a screaming beast....it had EMG pickups that neededa battery.....those are screaming pickups......you don't see very many Guild electrics.....someof Guild's acoustic guitars are awesome.... Members Bucksstudent
Epiphones just feel more "plastic" to me than the Gibsons.....it's kinda hard to describe Well, they're made out of wood, have paint, pickups, and strings on them. It looks like a real guitar. It sounds like a real guitar. I can't really argue against your stance that they feel like plastic, but they feel like guitars to me. I know what you mean, though. I've played bad Epiphones, and the finish felt and looked fake in comparison to a Gibson. However, I've also never played a Gibson that felt like two-grand. The moment I have two-grand and hold a Gibson in my hand that feels like two-grand, I'll take it, but all of my Epiphones are keepers.

Members Burgess
That's a nice axe. I'd question the decision to put locking Grovers on a guitar that already has a locking nut though. Fast string changes? That thing's got a Floyd so I'm not sure how fast you think those string changes will be.

Members 80z
So you would take a Les Paul and erase all of the Les Paul traits other than the body outline, then say "nothing like a Les Paul bro"? I can't say I blame you.

I wish there was a happy medium between traditional and new technology, but most players don't seem to want it.
