  • i don't buy guitars for what's on the headstock.. although there are brands that i've grown to trust, and i've come to expect their instruments to be of a certain quality

if others need to buy because of some sort of history associated with a name on a headstock.. cool

but buying a fake because of a name on a headstock is lame imo.. and a bit sad to be honest

and the thing that sucks about counterfeits is the fact that they do get passed off as the real thing... it might happen to some kid that's worked hard to save their dollars to get a guitar they've always wanted... and that is a ****************ty situation no matter which way you look at it

    • Most rich people pay less taxes than their secretaries do but they 'provide jobs' so they feel that they have an entitlement to pay less.

Correction: One rich person pays a lesser percentage of his income than the percentage of his secretary's income. That is Warren Buffet who does not make a salary. He is paid from investments so he is taxed on is capital gains. His secretary is paid a salary, which is taxed at a higher rate. I'm sure that Warren actually pays more than his secretary does.

Except Warren is behind on his taxes and is being pursued by the IRS.

      • Maybe I'll have to burn the fake

Better not. There could be all kinds of dangerous chemicals released into the atmosphere.

I think you should raffle it off here, with the proceeds going to help pay Warren Buffett's lawyers.

I'm going to sue him for Margaritaville sucking so bad.

        Oh, wait. Nevermind.

The guy I bought the Fake LP from was ripped off. A girl (I'm sure pretty) sold it to him for 1100. He's not a kid but was a noob who thought he was getting a great deal until his friend pointed out all the mistakes. He then sold it on CL for $400 to me.

I admit I'm a headstock whore but I also love the low end too but when I thinned out the herd, the Epis and Squiers were the first to go.

          • I'm not sure I'd go down this analogous road. So contributing to buying a Gibson that might have illegally harvested ebony is OK? Kind of puts Gibson slamming the counterfitters into perspective doesn't it? Face it, big business doesn't give a **************** what goes on as long as they're protecting their own mighty dollar!

Yeah, okay, I get the pitfall you point out in my particular analogy, but I still don't like counterfeit products.

My wife once went bat **************** crazy buying Louis Vuitton purses from e-bay. I warned her that the market was most likely riddled with fakes but she wouldn't listen. She must have bought at least a half dozen, each time she was saying that it had to be real because it had this tag, or this stamp or this cloth exterior draw string bag, etc. (I warned her that if they could fake a handbag, they can certainly fake hang-tags and packaging), and every single one that she received was a fake. Most of them came with cute stories about how their husband had bought it for them or they'd inherited it, whatever, it was all BS. She did get most of her money back from those purchases but it left her totally turned off from the "real deal" knowing how many of the ones you see out there (i.e. most of them) are fakes. So if she were to ever get a real one, now most folks would just presume she's carrying a fake since most likely every one they know that has one has a fake. And indeed, the quality/durability is not there with the fakes. Bottom line, counterfeits are inferior products and they do no good for the real product line or the consumer.

Now of course as far as our forumite's issue goes, I'm sympathetic and wish you good luck. All your intentions have been straight and at least you didn't import the dang thing into the country.

HCEG Existentialism: I buy guitars, therefore, I am.
Well Dick, it's got a good beat, and I could dance to it, so I give it a 10!
I have opinions of my own, strong opinions but I don't always agree with them.

            • It says "Gibson" on it, which is a crime no matter what he says when he sells it.

I hope you lean some stuff during the remainder of your time at your top law school.

absolutely wrong. if you dont know why, then you should perhaps take you own message to heart and learn a bit more about the law.

              • All of this for one Chinese fake? No one is more disgusted than I am about the Gibson and now every brand under the sun counterfeits. But the OP clearly stated he did not mislead anyone in his add and stated it was a fake, should he have just smashed it and thrown it in the garbage. When this first hit big I saw a lot of guys on forum boards order one more out of curiosity to see what kind of guitar was showing up of $300 then for the guitar itself. Also there is a big difference between owning one fake and buying a bunch of them and pawning them off as the real thing. Oh and the judge really threw the book at him with a 45 day suspended sentence, which means time served for all the frustrated lawyers.

Whu is it that Paypal the biggest enabler of these counterfeits the last time I looked have never been held accountable? After all it was through them that the Chinese were getting paid and they new darn well they were counterfeits. I went on ever major forum and told everyone to call and tell Pp that they would no longer use them if they kept participating but no one gave a ****************. Do you think Pp would be accepting money if someone was selling counterfeit currency which is the same thing. Hell No! Because the Secret Service and FBI would be all over them like white on rice for conspiracy to counterfeit, counterfeiting, and fraud!

I used to think Jimmy was

"wasting away again in my green-a-van
looking for my lost chiggerous dog"

...'chiggerous' meaning a dog laden with the chiggers.

I couldn't figure out what the connection between that scenario and blaming a woman that he loved was unless he thought that she took the dog.

                    Ah...childhood.

it would be illegal to sell them in a retail store if the shapes were trademarked (some kit care sellers have been nailed). but of course, owning a replica, selling said replica to another person, and buying a new one is all legal.

some people have a logic failing when it comes to the law. and of course everyone thinks the law is unjust when they are doing something wrong

                      • on it and sell it to someone, its perfectly legal. if you sold it in a retail store, thats a different story because you are attemting to profit on the trademarks of another company.

if you told the person is WAS a gibson or knowingly failed to mention is wasnt, then its very much illegal of course.

Putting the Gibson name on it strikes me as at least a Trademark violation.

why? how does putting the sticker on your guitar cause loss to the trademark holder? noones going to buy it believing its a real gibson. at best you are capitalising on their mark to attract buyers, but thats not going to apply to a personal private sale.

Well this is the first time I've read the story. Boy it was really apples and oranges as to what he was doing and what I was doing. He was actively selling many guitars and trying to deceive the public into thinking they were real Gibson Les Pauls. I was trying to sell one that clearly stated it was not a gibson.

This story was the basis for me going to jail if I got caught?

Well it's been fun and I've enjoyed all of the posts and I'm playing the fake right now in between reading the forum and typing this response. The Classic 57/Classic 57 plus sound really nice.

You could maybe put electrical tape over gibson and list it as a Chinese Les Paul style guitar if you still want to sell it?
Let a buyer play it before they judge it based on where it was made and what it says on the headstock.
