Members Woody_in_MN
Of those two - Gibson. The Gibson Studio prices have come down. If I bought an Epi LP again, it would be a model in the middle (Standard). - w
Members ExiledCrow
Sure, I know they don't make them anymore but mmmm Matsumoko Elitist!
Members Oldskool Texas
I'd keep saving my money and buy a better Gibson, used perhaps; or maybe a Raw Power LP with the '57 humbuckers ($1115).
Members Ouzhewen
What's a low end Gibson? The Studios are good solid guitars.. I have a Faded SG that I paid $429 new at MF and its an awesome guitar, but I don't consider it low end.. Cheaper, but not low end..
Members Echad
As always, the Gibson looks better... I always liked the Studio versions design - more stylish and less generic. Other than that, cannot tell from the picture. P.S. Studio Gibsons are the middle-end, Epiphone is their actual low-end: if you insist on using these marketing gimmicks, that is. P.P.S. So you are basically picking between a middle-end Epi (AFAIK, the Elitist series was labeled as their high-end) and a middle-end Gib.
Members JMR
I'd play both of them and do some research. A more expensive epiphone sometimes is better than a cheaper gibson. If you can find an epi elitist les paul, I've heard nothing but good things about them and that would be a good deal.
Members Rose Pickups
OK, Now which one would you buy?
Members elsupermanny14
I picked Gibson! Why..? Because the headstock says "Gibson" and not "Epiphone." Sounds dumb but when I go to resell the sucker the "Gibson" may cover its cost eventually. The Epiphone will not.
Members elsupermanny14
An to further add. I played a cheap looking Studio at Guitar Center and a nice looking Epiphone. Honestly the cheap looking studio just feels better. It just feels more solid.

Members Eddie
Of those two - Gibson. The Gibson Studio prices have come down. If I bought an Epi LP again, it would be a model in the middle (Standard). - w As is often the case, prices come down and it is now a more attractive buy, but let's not forget that prices came up before they went down. I remember being very tempted by a very nice Studio Plus for $750, brand new. I don't recall if it came with a case or a gig bag. I think it was a gig bag back then. I think the color was wine, and it had a nice flame top although the flame was not too pronounced or 3D. A few months later I think that they were well over $1000. Probably $1200-$1300 IIRC, so even with price-drops and sales their prices had increased noticeably. That's one Gibson I wish I had purchased. Members GAS Man
With my eyes closed and ears open I'd bet I'd prefer the Epi. The Studios are a bit hard sounding to me, whereas, my Epi Elite, for example, does a better job of nailing the tone of a "Standard" than some of my Gibbies. I'd bet that '59 RI does too. Members coinstarlp
neither... both the fretboards are cracked Can you imagine how many of those 59' RI's they would sell with a Gibbie shaped headstock? It's funny that it would make a difference, but I'm sure it would.
