Members campfirehero
I'm curious if people like lighter guitars or heavier. Maybe I'm missing something because as long as it sounds good is the only factor I worried about...
Members Alchemist
because most people dont like a 10+ lb guitar
Members Brewski
Alchemist is right = less than 9.5lbs is workable - after that it's really preference. Currently I like my PRS Custom 24 for its lightness and also am unhappy with it not being heavy sometimes - what can I say I'm wishy washy
Members jbandy10
I'm not sure if this is so much true for strats... But the weight of a Les Paul affects the tone in a big way. 8-9 pounds is the sweet spot.
Members Jim_Soloway
Because some of us are old with back problems. I won't play a guitar much over 7 lbs no matter how glorious it may sound.
Members Guitar Heel
I won't buy a strat if it's over 8 pounds. Just one of those things.
Members Superrust
those answers would sum it up for me. I had a tele that was just over 10.. it had to go.
Members campfirehero
Well I would've thought it had something to do with tonal aspects with lighter or denser wood, not comfort. Boy was I way off. I didn't realize some people would consider guitars too heavy to play comfortably. I have picked up a couple squier classic vibe strats that seemed lighter than average compared to other variations...
Members axegrinder
I don't think it's always about comfort. I bet you'd find that many strat players feel lighter strats sound more "strat-like". A light swamp ash body is considered a premium whereas a heavy northern ash body not so much. Alder usually falls right in the middle.
Members Blackhell
Personally, I couldn't give a {censored} how much a guitar ways. My Douglas is very light for an all mahogany guitar (about 6-7lbs). My Les Paul is fair bit heavier (mahogany neck, basswood body) at about 9lbs. I kinda like a heavier guitar, but it wouldn't be a deal breaker if it was light.
Members SuproSuper Man
i have a old les paul copy made of plywood with three humbuckers in it, that thing weighs a ton,,,play it for two hours and your shoulder actually starts to get sore....Usually denser wood conducts sound better, but denser wood is also usually heavier too...just sayin thats all , something to think about
Members Wyatt
People look for lighter guitars. Some for comfort, many because it's a generalization than lighter bodies are more resonant. It may or may not be accurate, but it's out there. My ash Strat is crazy heavy for a Strat (haven't weighed it), and I love it. After a few hours the ash Strat gets very heavy.

Members Burningleaves
There are so many great playing guitars out there that aren't boat anchors that I pretty much pass on the ones that are. Of course there is always the exception.
