Members Angry Tele
Just curious, how old are you? That is one of the classic solos of all time. Personally, I love playing it. I'm guessing you don't like southern rock in general? A ton of southern rock songs have epic leads that go on forever. Highway Song, Green Grass And High Tides, a ton of Allman Brothers songs, etc... allmans are great. They dont play the same lick over and over again. Stairway to heaven is like 4 bars of awesomeness. short and sweet. Hotel CA is an epic solo. Freebird is epic fail. Just my opinion, most other stuff LS do is great. Members MahaloVision
i suppose you had to be their back in the day to appreciate it, there hadn`t been any epic solo`s like that on the commercial scene before it Yes, you have to put the song into the context of the times. It was unusual to hear that kind of extended solo on commercial radio, where the hook of the whole song was the solo. The song itself is pretty pedestrian, and even the band didn't think that much of that part from what I can tell. I imagine that if they had all lived and were still playing the casino circuit today like every other classic rock band, they'd be echoing Joe Walsh's comment; If they'd known they would be playing this for 30 years, they probably would have written something else. Members 3shiftgtr
It was an epic song....when it came out in the 70's. I was in high school, partied and was just getting started on guitar. It was a really cool tune, I learned a bunch of licks from it, and saw Skynyrd play it live, the whole bit..... But that was 30 flippin' years ago....can't we move on at least a LITTLE???? Do I have to have some one ask for it at EVERY DAMN GIG I PLAY? Does it have to be in hourly rotation on the classic rock station? Just tired of it is all.....

Yeah I was tired of it in the the late 80's after I had heard it, and every other classic rock song, about 5,000 more than I wanted/needed. I was very happy when the 90's came around but now am right back to where I was in the late 80's (waiting, dying, hoping for some good new music). Just my opinion, most other stuff LS do is great.stairway to heaven is longer than 4 bars.there`s something about a lick when it`s repeated on a guitar over a fast song and collins does one in particular which is realy good on freebird, anyhow if you were to play 16`s on that tune and you didn`t want to repeat anything you would litterally be wanking all over the place . everybody does `em or should i say try to do `em ,Alvin Lee did a good one on the "Going Home" song from the original woodstock and his sound was killer,he just kept going and going and it`s something you don`t forget. I dunno. Bottom line its just too damn long and the bends sound sour. I like the SG slide parts though.

Listen to Stairway live he lengthens the solo a ton but doesnt do it by playing the same lick, he takes it places.

Members Hubert Stumblin
It's not a bad song. It's just one of those songs that I heard so many times while I was growing up that it has made it onto my list of songs that I never need to hear again for the rest of my life. Though I'm sure I will. Alot.
Members MahaloVision
Worse yet, Freebird spawned the imitators, most notably this:
Members guitarman3001
I mentioned Highway Song earlier. Another great song!!! Hell, I wish my band played Freebird more often. I play in two bands. My main band gigs between 4 and 6 times a month. They absolutely refuse to play freebird and the rare times they do play it, all they want to play is the solo part at the end. My other band plays about once a month or so and they do like to play the song so fortunately, I do get to play it once a month or so. Call me strange but I love playing it, just like I love playing sweet child o mine, stairway, sweet home alabama, and a million other songs everyone else hates to play. Members guitarman3001
I envy you, guys, for being tired of the best songs ever written here on the Earth no {censored}! I wonder if any of these guys play in classic rock cover bands. If they only stick to songs that haven't been overplayed on the radio, their setlists must consist of 1 or 2 obscure songs that no one in the crowd cares for, and they must play those 1 or 2 songs over and over and over and over....at different speeds hoping to fool the audience into thinking it's a bunch of different songs. Me, I like playing {censored} that gets the crowd dancing and drinking. la grange, sweet home, pride n joy, hotel california, etc.... and of course mix in a few songs that not many bands do but people still like, but believe it or not, people who go out to listen to a classic rock band still want to hear a lot of the standards, and I enjoy playing them for them. I avoid Classic Rock bands like the plague. Unfortunately most musicians my age (40'ish) are only in to the old stuff. Would strongly prefer 90's music to classic rock at this point. I don't mind doing some Classic Rock but they all want to do 90% (or more) Classic Rock. Not for me.

The Cars, Missing Persons, Evanescence, The Cure, Blondie, Carrie Underwood, The Vapors (turning japanese)etc... Ironically, this is the band that loves to play Freebird! Yet my main band that plays all classic and southern rock refuses to play it. Go figure... Personally I like playing it all.
Members GAS Man
It's the southern "Stairway" That's exactly what I was thinking reading some of the dissin and the Stairway comparison. I think Freebird is a great song all the way through and just as epic as Stairway but with that Southern flavor and a more straight forward honest emotion. It's also iconic for being one of the few - "can you play that?" songs of all time. Along with Stairway, Eruption, Cliffs of Dover, etc.
Members GAS Man
Truth. There's another one too that I wish I could recall, where it starts off great and then falls apart like a cheap suit. Although I like the intro arpeggio in Highway song, I think it does come off as such a rip that I couldn't invest the time.

Members Angry Tele
this solo is much better than Freebird. Its got the Scotty Moore/Jimmy Page lick, and the doubled guitar parts sound way better, almost like Redneck Iron Maiden. The vocals are pretty bad though.
