Members nuke_diver
So yes I could go to a real doc but that would cost me $$. I wonder if anyone either knows or has something similar to what I seem to have on my left wrist and though I'm not sure it's from playing I suspect. I started playing guitar seriously much later than some about 45, and because of the late start I work hard to be mediocre...so I play as much as I can. I started noticing about a year ago a slight bump on my left wrist which is a bit tender to the touch. My wrist can be sore and I have found (for example) I can no longer do pushups on my palms and have to do them on my fists (wrist not bent). It seems that the bump is getting a bit bigger though there is no noticeable difference in the level of discomfort. It generally does not bother me when I play unless I try to make a long stretch (I'm pretty much limited to 2 whole steps). Any ideas...just arthritis or something else? I have no desire for surgery

Members mdintx
I have one as well. It's along my tendon from my left index finger to my wrist. For a time, it caused me some pain. It's come down since. If it's not gone in the next year, I'll go to a doc and have it drained.

Members IBDBB
is it on the underside of your wrist? or top? A ganglion cyst can develop normally on the underside of the wrist from overuse of the flexor tendons which comprises most of the muscles we use to play guitar. If it bothers you, have it looked at. If it doesn't bother you, just keep an eye on it and massage it occasionally, distal to proximal. I have them in both my ankles and in my left wrist and i've had them for 15+ years. I'm also a physical therapist.

Members C-4
I have one as we speak, on my left wrist. It is painful to the touch, but I am going to have major left arm surgery in the near future, so I am not worried about the cyst. However, should it enlarge itself, I will crush it like the bug that it is.

I'm not sure I can afford that A ganglion cyst is a tumor or swelling on top of a joint or the covering of a tendon (tissue that connects muscle to bone). It looks like a sac of liquid (cyst). Inside the cyst is a thick, sticky, clear, colorless, jellylike material. Depending on the size, cysts may feel firm or spongy. Doesn't seem like this is it...it doesn't feel fluid filled...it feels like bone..hard as a rock, no give at all. It's on the underside of my left wrist just to the left of the major tendons (base of the thumb) Asking for medical advice from us to save money on a doctor is:freak: Probably true but this appears to be guitar related and I figured I'd get a better idea of what might be the problem here then from several trips to the doctor

Members caveman
I've had a couple of them on my left hand index knuckle. It's a sack of fluid that forms and you have to smash it to get relief. Rather than use a book, I use pressure from my right thumb and put the squeeze on it. Hurts like hell but both the pain and the cyst goes away.

Sounds like a different thing to me...maybe I will go see my orthopedic specialist...probably need to have him check the staples anyways
Members ExiledCrow
Sounds like a Ganglion cyst http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/ganglion-cysts/DS00767 Yep. Used to get them often. Why? Haven't had one in probably 15 years? Why not? They usually go away on their own. DON'T smash them with a book or other heavy object. It's one of those annoying things that you just have to wait out. UNLESS it gets a lot bigger, surgery is usually discouraged. Edit: The reason not to just whack it, is that it almost always works fine but can cause damage to something else, not likely, but ....
