Now if they could only add that annoying modem sound to the page loading then the experience would be complete!

I used to get on the PAN network in the 80's with a 300 baud modem. It was faster than this site has been lately.

Well, guys, I'm finding that life is too short for using the HC forums any more. I may check back in after a few months, but I can't kill any more time waiting for HTML screens to load.

Maybe Bain took the IT support money and is using it to fly Romney to swing states? Don't know, don't care....

Just wanted to use my last 90 minutes to log on, and put up this post to give my farewell to all the forum members. Peace, Out.

Let's be honest with ourselves and each other. What's wrong with the forum software is that it's owned and "maintained" by Musicians' Friend. There are many other boards using vB that are larger than this one, they work just fine. I also note that the Musicians' Friend sales site always works just fine. Furthermore, the old HC site also worked just fine almost all of the time.

MF bought Harmony Central because they wanted the user base but not the site. They seemingly failed to understand that it was the site that created the user base, and that if they changed / destroyed the site the users would leave.

Why buy the most successful musician's forum on the web then tear it all up? The logic of all this is incomprehensible to me. idn_smilie.gif

There are any number of reasons why you might actively do this... literally it might be not the user base but the search engine response that they were targeting, and the forums are an expensive add on to that to, say, the musical instrument reviews section and so torpedoing that only cuts down on the overhead while you still get cheaper search engine marketing.

Or maybe if you thought that you could leverage your back-end folks who build and admin the ecommerce part of your business to build and admin the community... but maybe it turns out that administering the forum databases fundamentally changes the skills necessary to make them work (I know a lot of stuff, but getting mySQL or whatever database program to scale across a bunch of servers is not one of them, so I can only speculate).

Or maybe the CPC sales on the site tanked after 2008 and haven't recovered, so there isn't as much revenue in maintaining the forums, so they are less motivated to maintain them.

But in any case, the proper skills to make the forum work smoothly aren't being applied-- from the outside this is difficult to say if this is intentional (and if so, part of a longer play) or simply bad luck creating a shortage of resources--

^ Costs big bux to do it right. Whoever owns HC just isn't into investing them big bux in a free service
:(
.

HC is owned by Musician's Friend, which is owned by Guitar Center, which is owned by Bain Capital, which is owned by... wait for it... Mitt Romney.

As the NY Times notes in its backgrounder on Bain Capital:

Mr. Romney

That would be a government intrusion into the private sector.

But the right reforms might make it harder for raiders of Romney's reputation to plunder once-profitable companies and run them into the ground.

It's worth noting that we are told that Bain Capital, of which Romney is the sole stockholder, has not operated under Romney's direct control in over a decade.

God help us if Obama tried to fix HC!!! Or anyone in his administration.

The first thing they would do is seal all the records and falsify the initial start up info. Then they would encourage members to go to other guitar forums and infiltrate with a view to cause havoc by spamming porn links every two seconds....and then, when those forums were collapsing they would lifetime ban the HC members who did the dirty work. Then, in trying to fix things they would spend a whole lotta money, make the situation much worse......and then blame the whole thing on Anderton. Throughout the entire ordeal, as members were dropping like flies out of frustration of not being able to log in or post........the Obama IT team would say things at HC were much better and present data to back that up....even though the data page would take a day to load.

What you're describing sounds for the most part like the forum is now. :idk:

I need to get in quick before HC grinds to a halt again.

I think you are probably right on this one Terry, this problem seems to be purposely intermittent, and word is getting around on other muso forums that HC forum might be on its way out, dedicated and long standing members will eventually get fed up and move on.

So whoever is the super webmaster for this forum, why not let us all know what the score is.

I've been told that they are working on a HC 3.0 that will be as close as possible in look-and-feel to the present forums (not at all like that Jive 2.0 crap). Unfortunately the constant issues with the present forum are diverting resources away from working on the "new" software :( . Hopefully they now have enough band-aids applied so this holds together while they get back to working on the new stuff :).

I just picked up Medal Of Honor-Warfighter and the new Call Of Duty-Black Op's comes out in a few days. So I will be off in game land for a while. Hopefully by the time I'm done the forum will be fixed or be a whole new deal or whatever.

I like coming here and as weird and oddball as some of you bastards can be.....I like you guys and like interacting and reading what you have to say. It's cool the different personalities and often when I see a response from someone I can sense how it's gonna be.......LOL..... it's a good thing. You blokes are a good crowd. It would be a crying {censored}in' shame to see that implode and go *POOF*. I say disregard the talk of the forum dying and hang tough until someone can either fix it or Anderton's SSS migrates elsewhere. If it does, I would love to be invited over.
