Members strtdv
I'm getting a set of bass strings for a friend of mine. He plays a Ric 4003. I'm wondering what strings would be a good choice for that punchy Ric sound, and also, coated or uncoated? I don't really know where to start, as I play electric guitar and don't really know much about the bass. Thanks for any help.
Members fretless
I have a few packs of SIT "Rock brights" waiting for my Ric to arrive , um should be any day now I'm not a fan of coated strings because they "mask" the highs too much for me and that stuff wears off and feels crusty . Members bholder
DR Hi Beams, or their coated ones if you like - hardly affects the sound at all. I hear Fat Beams are great, too (I think they're just a custom gauge set of Hi Beams).
Members jackcheez
DR Hi Beams, or their coated ones if you like - I got a set of Hi-Beams (40,60,80,100) that fit without having to file the nut. Hi-Beams are a very musical sounding string which works well on the Ric.
CMS Author Craig Vecchione Posted August 18, 2008 CMS Author Share Posted August 18, 2008 I've played the Ric strings, Rotosound Swing Bass, and DR Hi-beams on my 4003. The Hi-beams are by far the absolute shiznit. Love 'em.
Members Thumper
Hmmm... How about Rotosound nickel round-wounds?

Members strtdv
Thanks for the help so far. Couple more questions: What gauge strings would fit without needing to file the nut? (I think the strings on it are 45, 55, 75, and 105). And what length of string do I need (standard or long scale)? Thanks again.

They will fit any scale length up to 37 3/4".
Members strtdv
Thanks a lot, you guys have been really helpful (sorry for being such a bass n00b). DR Hi-Beams it is then
Members Thumper
Anything heavier than a 105 E-string may sit too high in the nut slot and throw off the intonation of the fretted F note.
