Members GWS5987
I've done a search, and while there are a number of TP threads, I didn't find any dealing with cover tunes. So, after years of requests for Tom Petty songs, we're going get off our old butts and learn one or two. What TP songs are you doing that get a good dance response? Moderators daddymack Posted September 15, 2006 Moderators Share Posted September 15, 2006 Runnin' Down A Dream, Free Fall...and American Girl... "Breakdown" is probably the most covered Petty tune, but in a similar vein (especially if you have a female vocalist), we used to do "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around"...which was the duet he did with Stevie Nicks:thu:
Members cooterbrown
"Mary Jane's Last Dance""Refugee""Don't Do Me Like That""American Girl""The Waiting""Here Comes My Girl" They've all done okay, more or less, for bands I've been in, in the past.TP just doesn't inspire a whole lot of dancing, IMO.He's more like something you put on when settling in for a road trip. Members JBJ
we do a pretty rocked out version of american girl that goes over well. we do kings highway early in the 1st set because its a throwaway and gets us all comfortable. sometimes we do the petty version of somethign in the air other ones id do: into the great wide open, i wont back down and ive seen a band do free fallin and have it go over well. probably the best response considering petty arent too big with younger crowds here but people still hear it and think hey thats the song from jerry maguire. Members ChordGirl
Mary Jane's last dance always hooks me, be it a band or juke box. Gotta stop all conversation and sing along...
Members Mr. Botch
Like Cooter said, most TP is not really that good for dancing, we've finally given up on the four or so tunes we did because they usually cleared the floor. They are fun to play, though.
Members srsfallriver
The only TP tune I'd bother with is American Girl. We do it and it always goes over well.
Members Scafeets
We're going to give "Learning To Fly" a shot. I think it'll be danceable, and I'm always looking for a song to play electric 12-string on.

Tried 'em from time to time for 25 years. Breakdown works the best, but as a change of pace.

Members salislore
I like the old Tom Petty songs. I think his newer stuff is some of the most boring music I've ever heard. I can't imagine any of it going over at a club.
