Top 20 Rock Bands of All Time

This is a crosspost from Amps to get some more diversity in the list. Here we go:

I want to hear them. Not your favorite, not even your preference, but I'd like to hear what musicians think objectively as possible, removing oneself from your own biases as much as possible, are the top 20 bands of all time. We always complain that most lists really suck, so let's try and make our own.

Bonus, you don't and probably shouldn't attempt to list them in order. Think of it like this-- you're choosing the top crowd... this is the elite crowd, these are the names amongst which you dream of being included of all time greats. Not an order, it's almost impossible once you reach 20 to objectively create a good order with some choices, so just give us the top tier.

This is an extension of a long offline conversation I had today.

My opinion of the top 20 bands, but without bias toward the bands I like? I'm trying to get my head around the concept.

There is obviously some bias, but for instance, while you may not love The Beatles, it's pretty hard to not recognize and know why they're so well liked, so influential, etc, and belong on this list (I love the Beatles, but I think they're pretty obviously a band that should be on the list despite personal opinion).

Most of those are biased :cop: I suppose mine are too, although they aren't my personal top 20. I mean seriously, I would switch out the Sex Pistols for Wire in a heartbeat.

lol, well IMO they are the best...are we supposed to put who we think are the best or who everyone else thinks are the best, if it's the latter what's the point of it?

I could make a good case for any of those bands, especially after reading some of the crap in other people's lists.

Sex pistols? they made one album, a very important one yes....but they were not a 'better' band than the clash. no {censored}ing way.

I agree. I own several Clash albums, and I don't even own Never Mind The Bullocks, but The Clash might not have made it to history without the Sex Pistols, so I have to give credit where credit's due.

and of course the obvious bias towards things we've actually heard!!

there is no way to do it, music should only judged on your emotional response to it, there is no other way to judge any art.

conclusion, stupid thread.

This is surprising close to what mine would look like. Only... Dylan would be bumped down to #3, Zep would be a couple spots higher ... and Pumpkins would be off. Replaced at #20 by Weird Al.

Dylan, Bowie, Neil Young, Springsteen - those aren't really bands. You guys aren't playing by the rules

If we're gonna stretch the rules that far, then I would definitely have included Bowie, Hendrix, Prince, maybe even Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.

Whatever. Another impossible thread.
