NP! traynor are very near and dear to my heart, being canadian. My yba1a will always be my favourite amp. And mine has been modded to run two 6550 in the power section, it pretty much DOESNT break up, and will level most venues when dimed. It melted the voice coils of all four of my speakers in my 4x12 with a muff. icon_lol.gif

Out of curiosity, how does the Traynor sound compared to the Hiwatt?

I'd keep the Twin. Those 2x15 Traynor cabs are a drag, too big and bulky and the speakers in them are pretty uninspiring. You're going to have to pick up another cabinet/speakers if you want the YBA-1 to really sound good. I love Traynor amps, I've had a couple of YBA-1's, but in terms of value I think you'd be coming up short. I might consider it if the guy throws in $200.

I agree, when it comes to the value, the 2x15 is pretty much useless and kind of the deal breaker.
a 74 twin is nothing to get too excited about, whereas a YBA-1 into the right cab certainly is.

I have both a 70's twin and a 70's yba-1 bassmaster amp, I use my traynor as my main amp. It's a better platform, it breaks up better and does the clean thing better imo. I can also pair it with a 2x10 so it's also easier to lug around when I wan't it to be.

It's a workhorse, a solid amp I can bring on the road, it's not expensive to replace so if it gets wrecked I won't have to break the bank to replace it. I have 2 of them and I absolutely love them.

It's as if a hiwatt and a plexi had an illegitimate baby together, that they gave up for adoption. So nobody knows how good this thing really is. I bought one for $200, the other for $300. You can't get a better amp at that price and to be honest even if I paid $800 -$1200 for one I'd still be very happy with it. So it's not as if it's only good because it's inexpensive.

I personally don't think it needs to be modded, unless you want it to sound like a different amp (bassmaster or plexi). The platform is there for you to do this, but it's definitely not necessary. People do this, only so they can get a plexi or 50's bassmaster on the cheap.

I love the character of this amp. In fact, whenever I go tour overseas, I often get stuck with a marshall, an orange or a deluxe reverb/twin. I'm never as happy with my tone as I am with my bassmaster. It has a certain punch, and ballsiness that I find lacking in most other tube amps.

The biggest issues these old traynors had were the cheap marsland speakers they came with, which is why people often associate them with not sounding too good. I would get a nice cab for it or at least upgrade the speakers in a traynor cab.

A couple simple mods that may be worth doing are replacing the volume pots and putting a master volume on it. I'd like a master eventually simply because this thing is fucking loud for a 50 watt.

A mod you must do is put a 3 prong plug on it. I have one that doesn't have this and get electrocuted regularly.

The traynor also takes pedals way better than my twin. Because it's a bass amp, it seems to handle anything I throw at it, much like a hiwatt. It also has 4 inputs, allowing you to daisy chain, creating some serious gain.

If I had to keep just one? Twin or Traynor. I would keep my traynor. It doesn't have the nice reverb or trem, but I could sell my twin buy a yba one, a beautiful cab and still have some extra money to buy a pedal or two.

Around here (the Land of Traynor) the early versions are getting very hard to find. What is the serial number? Any pics? It will be a desirable head - foshur

The cab is worth a hundred bux - that's it. You need good 12's to make the head sing.

Silverface twins are the cats ass and it would be a shame to get rid of a classic.

You have a tough choice, let your ears, and music syle decide.

A few Traynors I dragged out for a recent swap meet... A '72 YBA-1 went to a new owner

The cab he is offering would be logo-less though (I had two with this amp).
That is the one!

No sh*t? I've got more patience than money, no problem there. So I just keep checking ebay till I get lucky? No jacked up prices due to the lousy availability?

Not gonna quote all the pics, though they're damn nice to look at. Impressive collection you got there. Slightly off-topic question, srry: Tell me more about the georgious sunburst strat if you don't mind. Vintage? Custom shop? Partscaster? I'd love another strat one day, but I'm sooooo picky about the aesthetics it's not even funny. Yours pretty much meets my needs, depending on the neck profile and radius.

A reissue would be slick! Here's a reply I received from them last year on this very topic:

Hi Matt. Point-to-point hand wired chassis made in Canada with original-style components like those from the '60s don't come cheap, witness the YGM-3 Reissue at around $1,100. cross-counter. But it's our 50th aniiversary next year so a YBA-1 reissue might be a consideration. Of course it will be in cost competition with all those garage sale YBA-1s out there, so............? We'll see.
Thanks for the inspiration.

Well I have a YBA-1A, an EGC, and a Hiwatt as well(though mines a 100 watter) so I'll take a stab at it. They sound similar but the underlying breakup on the Traynor definitely has more of a Marshall crunch to it while the Hiwatt has that classic kerrang sound to it when pushed, think Live at Leeds.. The 1A is very stout and punchy like the Hiwatt and near as loud as well and the transformers are huge on it too which I feel helps with the punchiness. John likes to run the Hiwatt dirty and keep the Tranyor clean but I tend to do it the other way around because I really like the way the Traynor breaks up though it's really loud at that point, even with the channels jumped. Both amps really shine through on your playing dynamics as well, pick lightly and its such a beautiful clean sound and dig in for the real deal.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but what are you YBA owners using for OD? This thread is also incredibly relevant to my interests. I've been looking for a new amp and just recently tried a few Fender amps with my guitar and found that I prefer the Bassman to the Twin. I would like a bit more headroom than 50w can offer so I'm thinking either a YBA-1A or Bassman 100.

As for the OP, I'd see if you could get a bit of cash that you could put towards new speakers. I've heard the old Traynor speakers are pretty lame but I bet if you invested in some good replacements those 15s would melt some faces.
