I prefer my pedals over the bad monkey, but I could do a gig with a one channel tube amp and a bad monkey no problem if I had to. It's not bad at all. It is a fact that amps (like Dr. Z, THD, Diezel, Mojave, Bad Cat, Matchless, Allen, Aiken, Roccaforte, etc - the list is endless) are made with far higher reliability and quality today than ever before. Whoever disagress with that knows absolutely nothing about electronics - period.
Members maz_master
Originally posted by JamesPeters I bought a Bad Monkey yesterday as a matter of fact, and plan to buy some more pedals. It's not the same as an amp's own sounds but depending on the setup it can be just as good. It all depends on the amp and pedal in question. Right now, my "best-sounding" distortion tones ever are coming from three OCD pedals (setup for different gains and output levels) into a Dr. Z Maz 18 Junior NR head into a Jenkins H61 cab with British G12H-30s. I have been told by my bandmates and quite a few musicians in the house that this rig sounds better than my Bad Cat Hot Cat 30R and is probably the best sound I've ever had (although that's hard to tell w/o recent examples). In fact, the OCD/Maz rig sounds so good, I'm a little worried about the Herbert I have on order being able to keep up with it! No {censored}! But, plug those OCDs into my Flexi and it doesn't sound that good. The Flexi sounds much better w/o pedals and cranked up into a good attenuator...but that sound still isn't as good as the OCD/Maz combo. So, it's tough to make blanket statements about pedals and amps. A "magic" combination of the two (like the OCD and Maz 18) can be a lot better than many or most amps alone...and, that's exactly where I'm at right now. Let's hope the Herbert keeps up! PS - I should also mention that, at least with the Maz 18, every damn tube, the cab, the speakers and even the speaker wire play a large role in getting a great distortion tone. I tried a different hardness EL84 (other than the GT #6) and it didn't sound as good. Tried endless combinations of 12AX7s and the Tung Sols sounded best, by a long shot. The wrong 12AX7s actually ruined the tone with pedals...just ruined it. Tried a JJ 5AR4 and it didn't sound as good as the GT/Sovtek 5AR4. Forgot my Evidence Audio Siren speaker cable one gig and had to use a 12 AWG cable I made with Radio Shack cable and was wondering all night why my low end was so indistinct. Plugged the Siren in the next day and did A/B tests with the Radio Shack and could not believe my ears. The Siren drastically cleaned up the low end when using distortion tones. It was so drastic, I rewired my damn cab with the stuff! So, yes, even wires make a difference.

Are custom-shop hand-wired Hiwatts that are made today that much worse than the ones that were made in the 70's? -K I don't think anyone agrees other than the fringe vintage nutcases. I'd say almost all current amp makers who know their craft make better amps than were made 30 or 40 years ago. Back then, they used crap parts like carbon comp resistors, they were often wired messily, had less features, tones, etc.

Members LaXu
How about something compact for a change? It's a Stephenson LJ10. Ok, it doesn't look like a Hiwatt but that's to be expected when it has double the features crammed into a chassis that is propably like 1/3 of a Hiwatt head. Personally I wouldn't mind seeing PCB versions of many boutique amps if it made them more affordable. Some seem to be a bit "PTP wiring for the sake of having PTP wiring" things, you know? As for the Bad Monkey, I think it's a great pedal for the money. I've compared it head to head to some TS clones/variants that are 3-4 times more expensive and the BM held it's own. Yes, several of the 3-4 times more expensive pedals were more transparent when turned off as well as sounding a bit better, but I found the price difference hard to justify for what I felt were just a few % improvements at best. The BM also has a really smart battery compartment, unlike many boutique pedals which are basically just painted Hammond boxes. PS. Does anyone have a pic of the Diezel Einstein insides? I've never seen 'em.

The tape on the dc30 was put there by my tech after he had to replace one of those things under it when it failed. You think it's a cheap piece of junk because of what you read on the 'net, because of what someone told you, because of sound clips you've heard (the ever-present excuse you use), or the fact that you know it's made in China? You always bitch about something "sucking", and then when people realize you've never played the product you complain "the clips sucked". Then later, after being pwned numerous times on this forum, you end up trying it and realizing you were wrong. Then you pretend you never bitched about the product in the first place. This has happened so many times, I can't even remember how many times it's happened by now.
