  1. The past month or so, I've attended various guitar shops all over tokyo and I've played Gibson Les Pauls and Edwards Les Pauls. I noticed that there's something extremely "lacking" about the Gibson's. What is it? I don't feel like I'm playing a platinum-quality guitar like I'm supposed to, unlike the Edwards ones that are just fantastically amazing. It's not bad, but I won't pay more than a thousand dollars for them. Are Gibson's declining in quality? I thought it was pretty interesting that when I was in Japan every band I saw seemed to be playing Fender or Gibson, even though Japanese factories churn out generally equal or superior quality instruments for less. Based on the Gibsons I've seen, it seems USA and Japan had actually a much better selection of good ones, but that may be just because they get more of them than stores here in Finland. In any case it's still way too easy to find Gibsons with poor fretwork, too much neck angle and finish issues. Add to that the hollowed out bodies and the average modern Les Paul isn't exactly the coveted solid body guitar of the 50s/60s.
  2. The flametops shown here don't do much for me. I find that they're too uniform. I think some of the Faded LP Standards had really cool flame tops because they were all over the place. Don't know why those seemed to have much nicer tops than some more expensive Gibbys.
  3. Even with plain tops I like that there is some grain like on bigconig's LP. The G0 looks like a perfect LP to me. I wish manufacturers cut back on the veneers really. They never seem to end up looking as good as the properly thick real tops. I'd rather see that money spent on slightly better hardware, woods or QC.
  4. What a terrible T-shirt. Had they gone for a 0dbV scale with the meter going above it, the message would be much better.
  5. The LED thing is pretty common. Behringer also does that. If it made no sound then at least the tube is in the circuit but one preamp tube generally doesn't do all that much. I think the idea with the LED is that people expect the tubes to glow since they kind of look like lightbulbs. In reality especially preamp tubes don't glow much at all.
  6. I don't recommend using XP 64-bit at all. Vista is a better OS but it still needs some work. The first service pack is due either later this year or early next year and that should improve things quite a bit. If you're going to get a new computer it will most likely work perfectly fine with 64-bit Vista since the components have 64-bit drivers available and so on. The biggest problem will be audio interfaces and soundcards. I've been looking for one myself and at the moment the future compatibility of most of them is totally open, with only a few manufacturers offering Vista drivers, some of them only for the 32-bit version.
  7. The only ones I can think of would be Trainwreck and Dumble amps but I guess they're more clones than "lawsuit" amps. I don't think an amp manufacturer has ever sued another one or at least I've never heard of it. Besides even Fenders started from circuits found in tube manufacturer or radio books if I remember correctly.
  8. Web communications Helsinki Polytechnic Stadia 2nd year.
  9. I found the bridge pickup sounded thin and the neck pickup sounded muddy and both had poor definition. I replaced the ones in my 1989 RG550 with a Seymour Duncan Original Parallel Axis Trembucker and a SD '59 Model. Much better sound. Neither of them are high gain pickups.
  10. Yeah, get a used Mesa if that's what you want. Check the German and UK eBay, they sometimes pop for decent prices. New they are just absurdly expensive, most over 2000

    Mesa or Cornford

I'm not a big fan of most Mesas so tonewise my choice would be the Cornford. However, I do feel that it can be a bit limited. Not much in the way of features and also the 6W power rating means it has little headroom so cleans can be hard or impossible to get at higher volumes.
  12. How about something compact for a change? It's a Stephenson LJ10. Ok, it doesn't look like a Hiwatt but that's to be expected when it has double the features crammed into a chassis that is propably like 1/3 of a Hiwatt head. Personally I wouldn't mind seeing PCB versions of many boutique amps if it made them more affordable. Some seem to be a bit "PTP wiring for the sake of having PTP wiring" things, you know? As for the Bad Monkey, I think it's a great pedal for the money. I've compared it head to head to some TS clones/variants that are 3-4 times more expensive and the BM held it's own. Yes, several of the 3-4 times more expensive pedals were more transparent when turned off as well as sounding a bit better, but I found the price difference hard to justify for what I felt were just a few % improvements at best. The BM also has a really smart battery compartment, unlike many boutique pedals which are basically just painted Hammond boxes. PS. Does anyone have a pic of the Diezel Einstein insides? I've never seen 'em.
  13. Soo, with the Messe over can we finally get you to spill beans on the Schmidt..clips, what kind of sounds it can do, more pics and so on.

They are still pretty expensive, the Triamp MkII goes for about 2500
