And ever since AT&T bought them (was cingular before) their customer service has turned to crap. Cingular was just running around buying up everything they could so at&t has inherited their poor infrastructure which means some places will suck for signal. Too bad they don't have an iPhone. I heard it's coming either this year or next year to Verizon. But yeah, it's pretty common for iPhones to randomly have no coverage for a day.
