Members Stackabones
What has influenced you in the past .. or since the last FIT? * This thread has influenced me this week. If you don't want to read that thread, just listen to the song ... http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1395881/too%20much.mp3 It makes me wonder how many artifacts from the real world I would allow in my own recordings. Would a phone ringing, or a dog barking, ruin my perfect take?
Moderators Lee Knight Posted September 11, 2009 Moderators Share Posted September 11, 2009 Yeah, I liked that song a lot too. I liked his set up with regards to stripping back and going directly to the target in a simple manner. So... this week for me it is the songwriting of Adam Schlesinger and Chris Collingwood of Fountains of Wayne. Lots of folks don't like them. I think that is due to hearing one tune and thinking "that's them". Maybe it's the voice? What I like... Their ability to create something poignant from the everyday. To be funny but only in service to some bigger, sincere emotion. Members MusicalSchizo
I am way into early Joe Jackson right now. Crazy crazy into it, listening to the albums over and over, especially the first two. I enjoy pretty much all his music, but there's so much exuberance, attitude, and energy in the early stuff, and Graham Maby's bass playing is thoroughly inspirational to me. And Joe's lyrics are snotty and clever, which I always like. Brian V.
Members rsadasiv
Been feeling the need to rock out lately (probably an offshoot of starting jazz guitar lessons - I'm dysfunctional that way). Anyway, here's some truly bizarre Chinese video with one of my favorite noisy rock songs in the background. q7p6nQyNsm0
Members blue2blue
This week the big news around the blue2blue household was the arrival of a used CD copy of this album: http://www.sunbeamrecords.com/LILY_AND_MARIA/LILY_AND_MARIA.html Sadly, there's little web availability of the music of Lily & Maria, who cut one eponymous album for Columbia that received no promotion and sold very few copies, possibly only a few hundred -- but an album which became an elusive cult classic that saw vinyl copies going for hundreds of dollars before it was re-released by a British label late last year. There are brief streaming samples on the label page above -- sadly, far too brief for some of the hypnotically glacial L&M tracks... I hadn't heard Lily & Maria since around 1974 when my stereo and 300 of my most recently played records and most of my reel tapes were stolen. So, for me, this rerelease is something pretty special. Interestingly, although Lily & Maria look frail and doomed on the cover of the album, the two teenagers left the music business after Columbia sat on the album and appear to have had happy, healthy productive lives. Compare and contrast to the life and career of Judee Sill (who I mentioned a few Fridays ago), the tragic crypto-magical-Christian-mystic songwriter who, discovered by Graham Nash at the beginning of the 70s, received veritable hosannas from critics and the industry when her first album came out, but whose career sputtered and then delivered the seemingly sunny-dispositioned Sill on the far shore of addiction and dissolution before the decade was out. The music biz... it's a killer.

Members Etienne Rambert
Sunny Ozuna & Huey Meaux put it to wax in 1962. And for the first time, that San Antonio Sound became famous on the Anglo Pop Charts. Even if you played this record through a tin can speaker, this orchestration would still sound great. The strings absolutely slay me - especially at the end. And that back beat, wow! HGDpli-gk7g

Members Chicken Monkey
avett bros vid I just bought my wife this album for her birthday, and it hasn't left my car. We had downloaded the album a year or so ago, and listened to it non-stop then, but my music service went under and I lost it. Great stuff. I just pre-ordered their next one, too. Definitely an influence on me nowadays.
