I dropped in Tung Sol 6550's and I like them much better than the KT88's. They retained the tight low-end will beefing up the mids and taking a bit off the top in the higher register. It honestly improved the sound to my ears. I also retubed the whole preamp section as well.

I honestly don't get the "these are rubbish amps" comments. Maybe a retube does make that big a difference. I am blown away by this amp every time I play it (gigging with it about 8 to 10 times per month). I am selling a Marshall, a Fender, and 2 Mesa Boogies because this amp does everything I want it to and then some.

Even feel like I have barely scratched the surface of what this amp is capable of.

Funny thing is I expected to want to try it out and sell it---as I purchased it used and got a great deal on it.:)

It also doesn't grate on my ears as much. I find the Mesas give me a bit of ear fatigue by the end of a show. Blackstar feels more balanced and doesn't seem to have a spike in any frequency that can cause ear fatigue... and yet it cuts through the mix like a mo fo!

My bandmates also think it is the best sounding amp of all the ones I have used over the years. That tells me something too.:thu:

It's usually the negatives that will be more dramatic and vocal online.. for example, when a piece of gear is unreliable and you read reviews about it online, it's easy to think that ALL of them have unreliability problems because the disgruntled ones are so vocal. One of the best things you can do before buying any piece of equipment (not just musical but anything) is googling for problems and potential solutions. If nothing comes up, that is a very good sign. But even if there are some complaints, it might only be 5% but it might seem like it's 50%.

Anyway it's good to see some balance here in topics like this. Freedom of speech, yada yada. It's good. Gives credibility to both sides opinions and the thread as a whole. Too often it's about everyone jumping into the bandwagon for (Mesa for example) or against (Bugera lol). Life is never as simple as the internet makes it out to be. Basically online.. something is usually either the greatest thing since sliced bread or it sucks.

Nerine I like your music and Timmys band is OK but really some musictions are sloppy some have to take a few takes, so be it. But please remember they are paying you for a service and your job is to get the best out of it you can FOR THEIR BAND AND THEIR IDEA OF HOW IT SHOULD SOUND.

I used to record demo's for local bands (a couple were released on small death metal labels and other indie labels) I always told the band my job is to get how you sound on tape, and talk to the band to see if I could help them to achieve it. I am sure you are good at this, but my concern is you spend a lot of time changing the bands to fit with your idea of how they should sound. And you have always had strong opinions (some I agree with some I don't) but remember you work for the band.

I guess a lot of this came from the time you said you changed a few bands drums to samples without telling them, I was horrified. If I was in a band and you did this to us and we found out we would have been out for blood.

This is how I have read all this anyway, not a personal attack but how I saw it. Please tell me I am wrong
:)

I always loved your tone by the way.

I'd imagine 95% of records today have some form of sample replacement going on whether the band like it or not.

You have to remember it's not always about what the band want.

Because they overlook things that are important to making their record sound good.

For example, competitiveness.

For their record to sound comparable to other releases, the kicks and snares have to be changed to be big and fill up a lot of frequency information. If you don't do this, things rarely compete.

I like to sit somewhere in the middle. I try to keep as much of the drummers original performance as I can.

I try to leave in slight timing errors and human touches because for me, the imperfections is what makes music great.

When I replaced an entire drummers work with Superior 2.0 it was for the best.

The guy couldn't play to a click, had terrible sounding drums, had one cymbal, had a snare stand which didn't hold the snare correctly, had a second kick pedal which was nowhere near the hi hat pedal, I.e. it was obstructed, he also seemed a bit "slow"

I could have quite happily said to them, here's your absolute garbage drum tracks. The whole band were pretty awful and they spent a lot of time and money in the studio. I constantly feel bad that I couldn't make their record sound as good as I wanted but it was purely down to them being pretty awful.

As for the guitar tones, if a band come in and have brought amps with them, I always try to use them. Most of the time I do too. Sometimes though I come across something like the amp in this thread and it just doesn't get the sounds I needed.

Also Neil, I'm not sure how it was back in your day, but most bands nowadays WANT replacement and to use whatever amp works for the tracks.

Personally I'll be happy when it goes full circle and we go back to 4 mics on the kit and no replacement, unedited takes of great songs on all the instruments and very subtle use of EQ and Compression to sculpt the sounds on the record. It will also not be smashed to oblivion with a limiter.

For the record, I think most new records sound absolutely dog {censored} compared to old vintage ones.

I love the sound of Zeppelin records.

My second album is going to be produced in a similar manner. Dynamic range, performances, mistakes, vibe, soul and a great song all intact.

My day was 7 years ago :D

And it still stands, even more for the punk scene and indie scenes I come from.

I guess you are recording crabcore bands. The bands I know would kick your ass for that {censored}.

As for competitiveness, that's bollocks for most bands who do it for the music, that music is a sport bull{censored} is every thing I hate about the pop metal scene.

I have strong feelings about that because I care about real music. Not processed fake crap that is killing music today. It's like the craft cheese of music, great for a quick mcDonalds but not a meal you will remember.

Your last statement I agree with 100%

I mean, that in itself isn't such a bad thing - they get to make a living as band, be pro musicians etc. But don't pretend it is what it isn't - they're not exactly Tool or Zappa.

I play in a band that isn't generic, but no-one comes to see us, it never gets me laid, we have no money and I have to work in an office.

Amen

I prefer it that way too (oh and I like your band)

Have you used any of those drum mics on your recordings yet?

Same. The perils of being in a band of 30+ fat men playing music that only appeals to fat men with beards

Timmy - your band is very generic.

You guys sound like Paramore, but with a dude.

It's music, but it's not art.

Funny that, i dont remember hearing paramore doing guitar solos, having massive beatdowns and screaming.

If its a genre where you dont know the subtleties then its probably best you dont pass comment. It would be like me saying Machinehead sound the same as Bullet For My Valentine, i dont listen to a great deal of metal so i dont know the differences in the genre.

heres a paramore song for you:

This thread shouldnt be about my band or recording, it was started about an expensive and really rubbish amp.

It is a little Generic, but enjoy yourself :)

and a rubbish amp in your opinion, but that's all subjective, like your original band in your opinion, and generic in ours ;)
