Members Chrisjd
Hi guys. I am looking at picking up a bass guitar but I am trying to stay within a budget of sub $700. I get a nice discount on certain brands such as: Schecter, Yamaha, Warwick, Spector, Dean, and a few others. So, far I am liking the looks of the Spectors and Schecters 5 strings. I am wondering, what would you consider to better for heavier styles? I don't want to swap pickups, so I want something that has that "KERRANG" sound to it, real crisp and punchy. What would your recommendation be? Here are two models I am looking at... http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Schecter+-+Stiletto+Custom+5-String+Full-Size+Electric+Bass+Guitar+-+Vampyer+Red/9524286.p?id=1218119806178&skuId=9524286 http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Spector+-+Legend+Classic+Series+5-String+Full-Size+Electric+Bass+Guitar+-+Natural/3646334.p?id=1218422887067&skuId=3646334
Members fretless
I've scored some great basses for less than 700 used, but here are a few more 5vers to check out , out of your list I'd probably lean towards Spector . http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Brubaker-Brute-MJX-5-5-String-Bass-Guitar-NAMM-DISPLAY-BASS-Free-Shipping-/320862314370?pt=Guitar&hash=item4ab4e25f82 http://www.ebay.com/itm/ESP-Edwards-E-N-125-kagrra-Nao-signature-5-string-bass-w-gig-bag-/320860912431?pt=Guitar&hash=item4ab4ccfb2f http://www.ebay.com/itm/G-L-L-2500-5-String-Electric-Bass-3-Tone-Sunburst-Awesome-Pickups-Great-Feel-/270878325784?pt=Guitar&hash=item3f119b3c18 http://www.ebay.com/itm/1999-Warwick-Germany-Streamer-Standard-5-String-Bass-Red-German-Made-/230758232373?pt=Guitar&hash=item35ba433135 http://www.ebay.com/itm/1999-Warwick-German-Streamer-Standard-STD-5-String-Excellent-Shape-/120853845097?pt=Guitar&hash=item1c23735469 http://www.ebay.com/itm/KSD-Proto-J-5-String-Bass-/260975260104?pt=Guitar&hash=item3cc35671c8

Members PDbyS
+1 on Fretless' recommendation of the G&L 2500 Tribute. You can get a lot of usable sounds out of it, metal or not. You can find the Spector you're looking for for the

Members Zeppelin Rules
Bass doesn't have toan. Most of the time you get an agressive bass sound via the rig you're running it into more than the instrument. I'd just get a P or J bass and be done with it. Active pickups if you must. Members DeadNight Warrior
I personally enjoy the hell out of my Yamaha BB bass. I tried a BB 5'er however many years back when I was shopping for a bass. Didn't like it coz the string spacing felt too huge to me. Am definitely a fan of the Yamaha RBX stuff though. Members Valtiel
That's a pretty bold claim. And I wouldn't say entirely inaccurate. Precision, Jazz, MM, Soapbar....all have very different and extremely distinct tones. To the OP, crispy and punchy absolutely SCREAMS MusicMan Stingray to me. The 5'ers allow you to switch between series and parallel as well, parallel giving you the aforementioned punch and crispiness with the series giving you more thickness and less crisp. They are however difficult to find around $700, not impossible though. Another favorite for aggressive pick style metal playing is the older Fender Deluxe P-basses that have the humbucker in the bridge.

An alternative to Fender's older Deluxe P. The Fender one was active where Schecter's is passive. It sounds like a P with 2 single coils in the bridge.
