Members grunge782
I believe it is supposed to be mahogany, but it looks a little strange to me .
Members FretFiend.
Yeah. Sapele is streaked like that, but it usually has nice straight streaks. Maybe some irregular grain or something. A closer look would help.
Members grunge782
Hmm...so is it just "bad" wood? Or does the look not matter?
Members Terry Allan Hall
Hmm...so is it just "bad" wood? Or does the look not matter? Sapele (if that's what it is) is exellent wood for backs/sides, every bit as good as Honduras mahogany, and pretty cool looking, as well.
Members Opa John
Yep.......looks like Sapele to me too. And, as far as looks go, I like the look of Sapele more than Mahogany.

I'm beginning to, as well...only own one sapele instrument (my Taylor 355), but it really looks spiffy when the stage lights hit it, I'm told. Mahogany is more "understated". Members kwakatak
I suppose it could be sapele but the rippling is a bit irregular. It could be curly mahogany or khaya though.

Members Tony Burns
Looks more like figured mahogany to me , sapele figuring is usually more narrow -but it could be that as well . ( cant verify if its plywood or solid )One thing i have learned is that is hard to give a definitive answer on smallish photos of wood .Never ask for a definitive answer unless the guitar is in a trained woodworkers hands - I had a discussion with an individual woodworker yesterday -he said a piece of wood he had was mahogany ( he found it in some scap pile ),I told him it looked more like Black cherry ( Im an old woodworking teacher -still think Im right - but I'm not always )
