Tired of my tele

I've only had it for 3 weeks and I'm already bored with it. My MIM standard strat sounds the same and has an identical neck, so it's like having two of the same guitar. I want to keep one of the two, so I chose the strat because it's more comfortable and more tonally versatile. I'm going to sell the tele or trade it up for an epi casino. I've never gotten rid of a guitar before so I'm worried that I'll really regret it. It is a fun guitar to play and has potential for upgrades so I might miss it. Is there anything I can do to make a MIM standard tele sound more like a 'real' telecaster?

I know this post is kinda pointless but it was a hard decision and I just felt like telling someone about it :(

You must be playing through a POD or VAMP or something.

Strats and Teles DO NOT sound the same.

Yea I found that assertion hard to believe too. Telecasters have a unique tone...like a jazz box or Les Paul does in comparison to a strat. You always have to have one in your arsenal for that reason. Have you thought of swapping out the pickups ?

Well, I would think they'd sound fairly similar in that:
Like tele is more equal to strat than tele is to the Epi Casino you mention.

I am a little surprised that you don't think the MIM sounds like a "real tele". You could probably try some Seymour Duncan Antiquities pickups to get you closer to a vintage tone, but I was thinking of suggesting that you look at something like a DiMarzio Pre B-1 for the bridge. That would give it a bit more bite and output and then maybe enhance the diff between it and your strat.

I'm a geetar junkie so I would hang on to both and just add others when you've got the scratch if possible.

Stratocasters and Teles sounds too similiar in my opinion too, there are differences yes, but they still sound similiar. That's why I went with the LP route

It's a Fender amp. The tele has a little more 'punch' and cuts through the distortion more, but it's sounds relatively similar. It doesn't play much differently than the strat because the neck is exactly the same (except the headstock of course). I have considered new pickups, but I don't know how much of a difference it would make. In another thread someone said something about it sounding like a strat because of the thickness of the bridge plate.

I'm a collector at heart to I am hesitant about getting rid of it. Any suggestions to make it sound more like a classic tele are welcome.

Thanks dudes :)

Well, I'm in the "change the pickup" camp, though I don't think you want to go with a Pre B1 to make it more vintage sounding which is the route I'd take if I was looking to increase the tonal differences between a Strat and a Tele. Pre B1s are rawer sounding and really need 500K pots to keep any of the Tele twang at all.

I would give it more time. It takes me a while to notice the subtle differences in guitars but the more I get used to how a guitar sounds the more I hear the difference. Also, you may need to adjust the settings on your rig to bring out or optimize the differences.

Why are you keeping the guitar that has LESSpunch and doesn't cut through as well?

:thu: this is a good alternative and the results are great...

All my guitars sound roughly the same through my Genesis3 in the Lynch, Dimebag, Overkill, Metallica patches.

You may want to turn off the distortion and try again - My Strat, Tele, PRS, 335 copies all sound completely different and unique clean and through the blues patches.

If you only have a one trick amp you may need some new gear.

BTW - getting rid of a guitar on this forum is almost considered a crime.

If you havn't been playing electric for a while, they will sound the same because they do sound somewhat similar.

Mind you, I'm not saying they do the SAME, but similar in some respects. So yeah, if you really like the tele then perhaps keep the tele for a while and just really listen to yourself to find the differences. Or just get another guitar and play with it before you buy it.

Anyway, how's your stratocaster set up? stock pickups and such? Maybe the "problem" lies there.

Do a google video search, there's a guy that tests out the sounds between a stratocaster and a tele. forgot what to search for, just search for stratocaster and look around.

good luck

It's okay in this case, he'd be using it to finance yet another guitar! Now if it's to pay for your mother's operation, that is definatley a crime.
