You can't say Van Halen weren't a great band or that they didn't have some great songs - but that was ages ago. Their on again/off again relationships with Roth and Hagar now just seems like a running joke. Their split with Anthony (especially) from what I've read sounded like it was plain malicious, and probably based in part on greed within the VH camp. The best thing Eddie could do now would be to play out and connect with people - and not sweat the small stuff.

What is this porn-type music that Eddie made that everyone is referring to? Are you talking about the twister soundtrack or something?

As I recall, he has a friend who is a porn director so Ed decided to contribute to a couple of his songs.

Eddie...no one inspired more people to pick up a guitar than you. EVER.

I recall reading somehwere that Eddie was inspired to pick up the guitar after seeing the Beatles on Ed Sullivan. There were many more like him.

I don't dispute his influence on the way guitar is played, but I think the Beatles probably had a bigger impact on generating interest in playing guitar.

Come to think of it; Eddie might have been so good that it caused many guys to put their guitars down and give up. :D

Absolutely. There's a reason all those cheapo pawn shop axes came out in the '60's. The guitar had completely lapsed in popularity before the Beatles came along.

Ed's a great player, but he's not even in the running on that one...

OK, so this may be old news to some of you, but now that EVH is out of rehab he's inked a deal with Fender to produce 300 replicas ($25k a pop) of his Frankenstrat. He also now has his own EVH line of amps, the 5150 III, and indicates more guitar offerings are on the way. Physically, this is the healthiest I think I've seen Ed look in years and years. But, will it last? Here are my thoughts:

- The 25k guitar deal is a money-making scheme and nothing more. Meant only for collectors. WHY would Ed do this after the Charvel Art Series guitars, which are basically the same guitar, only un-reliced? I can't imagine this guy ever needing the dough. Besides, wasn't one of his reasons for doing the EB/MM and Peavey Wolfgang guitars was to offer a high quality, highly playable guitar at a decent price?

- Has anyone here played the 5150 III amps? I'd love tos ee a combo offered. I'd guess these amps are based on the Soldano sound also?

- Will Ed stay fit and focused and put out some new music with Van Halen (or anyone)? And I'm not talking porn soundtracks either. I was very disappointed that he couldn't get sober enough to tour in 2007.

- When will finally stop playing stupid wino/druggie rockstar and ackknowledge what he truly is: The Greatest Guitarist Ever?

Better yet...who cares?

I care. I can listen to every great guitarist out there and only 3 stand out in my mind as being innovative and original. Every other guitarist masturbates to a 4/4 beat. Eddie wrote some great stuff and became the master of harmonics and noises.

You can't tell me that the elephant sound isn't cool. Who else could use that in a song and make it fit?

I've said it before, I'll say it again.....I was never a big Van Halen fan, but just on the basis of being a fellow human being, I wish him well. I hope he finally gets his {censored} together and gets on with his life.

As I would wish the same for anyone, rock star or not.

As for the guys who keep ripping on him for being a junkie/bad teeth/bad hair/whatever.....you remind me of some cretins I used to know when I was in 10th grade....grow the {censored} up and act your age

+1000 i will never understand why people get on this forum and bash so many great people because of their shortcomings. people {censored} up and make mistakes and i dont see how anyone can criticize that unless they themselves are perfect. no matter how many times it happens as long as they are trying to rectify their mistake, i think we should always speak positively of that goal. its their choice to screw up their massive amounts of success and piss it all away, but when they try and make amends for it, theyre belittled relentlessly for {censored}ing up in the first place. im sure if the people on here that im talking about were in eddies shoes and asked for forgiveness for doing these things, of course theyd expect to get it and then wonder why people talk {censored} about them and make stupid comparisons about them. whether your a rock god or a bedroom player, its all the same. people are all the same. some just screw up sometimes. k...im done being redundant now.

I wish people who don't necessarily dig EVH's music would still give him the gratitude and respect he deserves. Many of the guitars you're playing today were directly influenced by Ed's tinkering: slanted humbucker at the bridge, locking tremolo, wax-potting of pickups, hotly wound pickups, effects setups, amp settings and modifications, the Super-Strat design, and on and on. I'm not claiming he actually invented anything, but he pushed these helpful modifications to the forefront of guitarists and manufacturers minds so that now a great deal of modern guitars bear his influence.

And what about his playing? He popularized harmonics, tapping, two-handed hammer-ons, simple chords woven into ridiculously fast scales played distorted and loud. There were others who came before him who did many of these things, but none of them had the popular effect that Edward's playing did. He made countless people pick up the guitar, as well as sending countless players back to the woodshed. Along the way he became a household name, sold millions of records, and made some of the best hard rock music ever.

Why not show the guy some respect and root him on to get back to the place he was?

Fixed it for ya!

J/K. Ed is great. He really has his place in guitar history, no doubt about it.

Even though he seems like a nutty, spoiled, drunk, Hollywood egomaniac he can still kick ass on guitar. Well, not nearly like he used to, but still kinda cool.
