What do you usually pay for a guitar?

A hundred bucks is my strike price.

I've spent more after careful consideration, but at 100 I bite fast.

I lost my spreadsheet, but my average was under 150 even with several expensive ones in the mix.

You got me beat. My avg is $180. Most expensive was $325 for a lovely Fender Nashville tele.

My range is $200 to $2,000 for my 6 guitars with an average price of $775. Without the $2,000 indulgence (LP), my average would have been $530. I usually only get more guitars if I find a great deal (either I'm a cheap bastard or can't really justify buying more guitars unless I can justify it as a steal).

Plenty of great guitars out there for less than $1,000!

- Fender Am Dlx Strat (w. Kinmans) $1,000
- Gibson Les Paul Studio $1,000
- Gibson Les Paul Junior $800
- Carvin H2 $550
- Epiphone Dot $500
- Hamer MiA Cruise bass $400
- Danelectro 12-string $375
- Marina Strat copy $150
- Peavey Fury bass $100

Not counting hand-me-downs and the occasional grad gift, about $542 average.

The Cruise was probably the most stunning score I've found. I noticed it in a music store around 3 years ago, realized it was a stunning deal (around $600), and told all my bass-playing friends that it was there. All of them looked at it, and said it was "ugly" (it looks really 80's, with a yellowed silver pearl finish and black hardware), and didn't even bother trying it out, despite the fact that it was set-neck, played like a dream, and had Bartolini pickups in it.

I didn't bother with it (my wife plays bass, so I never felt the need for one) until she convinced me to sign up for Victor Wooten's Bass/Nature Camp last year. Figuring I finally needed a bass of my own, I walked into the store to see if that Hamer was still there. Yes, it was and reduced to $500 (it originally started at $1,200, eight years before).

After giving the bass a final, severe once-over (it passed) I offered the guy $400, tax in. He initially balked, but caved when I thanked him politely and put the bass back on the rack. So I walked out, paying $400 for a $1,200 bass! And yes, the guitar was probably worth at least $800.

mine are all generally around $700ish.... that might be the average.

Fender Cyclone II- $600 (roughly)
Gretsch G5120- $600
Gibson Flying V Faded- $600 (used)
Peavey t-26- $200 (used)
Fender MIM Jag. HH- $800

so I guess the $600-$800 range, really. That Jag though, this is OT for this thread, but that thing just keeps shocking the living hell out of me with how much I love it.

Mean of mine would be in the $225 range- cheapest being my Squier '51 at $69- with the two that blow the curve being my Highway 1 Tele and my LP Studio with BFG Electronics.

For you statistics geeks, the median and the mode would be $200. That has always been the sweet spot for me and I have a lot of great guitars that I have picked up for 2 Benjamins or less that I would put up against most anything sub-1K.

For those that say they will never spend less than 1K- whatever. I personally would rather have 5 $200 guitars and cover a wide range sonically than have $1000 tied up in one guitar.

Like many have said, I go for deals. I buy guitars that are worth well over what I paid so that if I keep them 5 minutes, 5 months, or 5 years, I will never ever ever lose money unless I run over them with a car... and some of them not even then ;).

Let me count and you don't laugh.

Crappy "Hero" classical acoustic -- 150 CNY = 20 USD
Killer MIK Epipone Les Paul standard plus -- 3500 CNY = 450 USD
Good Squier Tele + new pups -- 980 CNY = 130 USD
Good Epiphone DR100 acoustic used -- 300 CNY = 47 USD

Average 1232.5 CNY = 178.6 USD

Fender '85 MIJ Strat = 750$
Fender Delonge Strat = 850$
Fender Precision Bass = 850$
Gibson Les Paul Studio = 650$
Yamaha APX Acoustic = 650$
Squier Super-Sonic = 250$

= 667$ Canadian. Not too shabby. That is only including the ones I still currently own. about half of them bought new. I'm still in university though, so these are spread out over years of being thrifty and eating lots of noodles

my cheapest was around $1500, most expensive was around $4000.

i pay how ever much what i want costs.

This is also how I buy them. I have two as low as $500 because they're what I wanted. Then they are $800, $1000, $1200, $1800, $2500, $2800, $3100 and $3500 (this is 6 guitars and 4 basses).

In each case, I had no idea what the instrument cost when I was trying out everything I could get my hands on, and I simply didn't CARE what it cost. In every case, I could have spent either much more or much less for instruments right there to buy if I wanted.

But if I find something for $150 that turns my crank, I'd buy that too. I've always already made up my mind what I wish to purchase before I learn the price. This is true price-no-object shopping.
