The R4, R6, R7 etc nicknames are shorthand for Gibson's model numbers for the Historic reissues. The model numbers are LPR-4, LPR-6, LPR-7.

 

 

Thanks.. I just wish I could afford one.. Man I'd have to work a long time before I can get a Gibby, that's why I'll probably get a strat first..

It's not an undercoat.

 

The original gold top paint used bronze flakes for the color, and when the clear coat wore away (or was cracked off), the bronze tarnishes green. And yes, the tarnish does continue to grow and you have to wipe the fuzz off. The green on my guitar is a little washed out in the pictures I posted, but it's there were the forearm rests, very obvious in person.

 

The "Bullion Gold" finished used on LP Classics is different, it uses gold plated mica, so it won't green. I'm sure most of the imports don't use the original style paint either.
