Members musicmaker '55
One of my jam mates has a an '87 Strat in Surf Green. Probably the first issue of that color (since it is a replication of aged Daphne Blue). I assure you that it is a straight color with absolutely no metal flake in it. Members Doctor Morbius
Surf Green was not a replication of anything. It was it's own color from the same era as Daphne Blue, Dakota Red, Fiesta Red, etc.

I thought sure it was an auto color...like from DeSoto or something...not that I've ever seen anyone identify what it was exactly. I've heard Fiesta Red is supposed to be Ford Poppy red. I think lake placid blue is a 56 Cadillac color...

But, if you look at a 60's Fender in Daphnie Blue with the pickguard off, the exposed areas do look Blue-Green in comparison. I always thought Surf Green was a variation on that based on what I saw and read. BTW: That custom color chart is very cool! ..

Members Wyatt
As these guys have mentioned original "Custom Color" is an opaque color, not metallic what-so-ever. That doesn't mean the that Fender did mix a variation for a modern guitar.

Members Tweedledee
Fender Surf Green doesn't have any sort of metallic look to it. Perhaps your guitar is Sage Green Metallic rather than Surf Green? Here's a photo of my Surf Green Tele for reference.
Members buchanan-d
I'm wondering if they are thinking of the color Surf Pearl. It had metalflake in it. Can look close to Surf Green in various lighting.

Members carmetal
Definitely 'Surf Pearl' (a 1957 DuPont Chevrolet color), which was more recently offered on the American Hot Rodded Texas Special Strat. Please refer to the example below:
