  1. Cool, I had a Medallion V for a while. IIRC they were made to commemorate the Olympic Games (which is actually kind of weird). Sold mine a long time ago.
  2. I like Bowie and Lennon fine, but know Earl Slick more from Phantom, Rocker and Slick then from anything he ever did with anyone else (aside from the Stray Cats record he played guitar on). I know he did play with Bowie and Lennon, but am unsure what he played exactly. The last few clips I've seen of him I haven't really dug what he has been doing or his tone, but that's just my opinion. If you can get a copy of Cover Girl or the first PRS record you may dig his playing. here he is recently, I'm not so into this, it seems like his playing isn't quite as sharp as the old days. On the other hand, you have to give him props for being the only guy to put a Floyd Rose on a Danelectro Longhorn!
  3. I don't have a problem with endorsements per say. What kind of annoys me are the people who advertise a ton of things. I mean, the ads for this (which all seem to have some sort of goofy Photoshopped background) say it's the best he's owned/played. That really makes me question the quality of the $5000 Framus he was trying to sell us a year or two ago. I like Earl Slick. I think he's a great player. I have the Stray Cats record he is on and I think I'm probably the only one out there that bought Phantom, Rocker and Slick's debut and second album on both vinyl and cassette. I have a solo instrumental record he made as well where he has a Goldtop on some 90s type of background). I just find his marketing choices kind of goofy, but I guess he has to pay the bills. I like GFS Jay as well. I think his marketing lingo is pretty goofy, but he's a decent guy and he fills a niche. There was a time where he was the biggest thing going on HCEG. Don't hear as much about them as we used to.
  4. The only person worse then Slick for that is George Lynch. I liked Earl Slick in the Stray Cats, like I said. Mainly, I'll remember him as the only person I ever saw put a Floyd Rose on a Danelectro.
  5. Someone posted the PRS record (there were two of them). There is also a Stray Cats record which Earl Slick plays on which I was referencing.
  6. Always thought the Stray Cats were better when he was playing guitar. Still have the PRS records and the one SC one he is on as well.
  7. I accidently did a trade for a chambered 90s Standard. It was decent, but it didn't sound anything like a LP - more like an SG. Not a fan. Played a Historic Cloud 9 and it was one of the more authentic 'Burst' sounding guitars I have played.
  8. I'll start with Neil Schoen in Journey. i opened this thread to post this. lol
  9. Thanks for the reply Dave. You pretty much confirmed what I thought after seeing the trailer. It looks like a fun story, I can see a lot of people liking it. When it's on Netflix I'll probably check it out.
  10. there must be a real rocker front man somewhere......apart from Meatloaf who was stage theatrical rock to the core without a hint of camp.. Marc Bolan maybe, but even that would be a stretch.
  11. I heard on the radio today that Tom Cruise now plays guitar, and he may tour with Warrant and sing. I heard CC DeVille on Sirius the other day saying Cruise 'passed the test' and that he, Brett, Ricki and Bobbi have all offered Tom a spot opening for Poison. That being said, is the movie awful to sit through or is it more an amazing bad movie like Death Wish IV The Crackdown that is very enjoyable to watch? Also, I have not been able to find any clips of Tom Cruise singing. I would think he could probably sing ok, as he has been in show business a long time.
  12. I have one in the bridge pickup of a guitar and I really like it - but I have liked the Lace stuff since they came out. YMMV.
  13. I have an old Dual Showman and it sounds great. It's a Pre-CBS one. I also have one of the 90s ones which is a very underrated amp IMHO. Also have a few old Marshall amps including a Plexi and an old JTM-50 combo. They're all nice but the Fender and Marshall amps sound very different.
  14. How would adjusting the trussrod make a difference to the string tension? In the case I'm talking about it was less about string tension and more that the guitar felt stiff. Very stiff. The rod was way tighter then it should have been loosening it and giving the guitar a few adjustments (trem claw, saddle height, etc...) really made a difference. It felt like a completely different instrument. YMMV
  15. You may want to check your truss rod. I had someone bring me a very stiff feeling Strat fairly recently. Adjusted the truss rod and did a few other minor things and it felt great. Not sure how yours is set up but I can't imagine .010 on a Strat being very heavy.
  16. Cool. I had heard they were made in Mexico now. I always think of them looking like this:
  17. Are they made in America or Mexico? I just can't get over that they look like this inside. How is the reliability?
  18. looks cool, good job! If you bring your seams out farther you can eliminate a lot of sanding - doesn't matter at this point - looks good:)
  19. Your paint job will only be as good as your prep.
  20. If anyone pays some college kid $60.00 to put in a pickup I'll be surprised.
  21. When I was in college I just let MARS and Guitar Center screw me. Example - I would build as close of a copy to a vintage guitar as I could. I would then walk in (or send a friend in) to the store and proceed to tell them I knew nothing about guitars but needed money. I would usually get $1000 - $2000 for something that may have cost me $200 or $300 to build. MARS in Natick had a seafoam green strat that I built up on the wall for $8500.00 for years. They gave me $1700.00 for it. Then I would also get to laugh at the store for having a copy on the wall for big money. People are a little more savy these days and I haven't done this in about 10 or 12 years. I flip a lot of stuff but in your price range it may be not worth the time.
  22. Yeah, that's why you just put your cell. If someone has cash and are ready to buy they want it asap and need to ask real questions. Plus you get fewer crazy trade deals.
  23. I met a kid a couple of years ago who was the son of one of my wife's work colleagues. He had been mowing lawns/shoveling snow, etc. since he was like 10 or 12 and he owned two vehicles that he bought with the money he had earned and saved over the years - a Mustang (not sure of year) and a 2003 Explorer. I was very impressed with this kid. He was 15 when I met him and couldn't even drive the vehicles he already owned... I wouldn't buy a car I couldn't have driven. When I bought a used car it was reliable and cheap for the time - 1k. I am lucky in that I have always been a saver. I think it's more a personality thing then anything else. It blows my mind when I see the 'must sell gear - lost job need food' posts. I love my guitars as much or more then anybody else, but before I drop money on gear I have the bills paid, money put into savings and extra on the mortgage. Luckily, this country is going through a corrective cycle that will teach irresponsible people that having credit card balances and houses they can't afford is not a good thing.
  24. It's not a scam. The deal is you have to send your guitar to them and then when they have it in hand they give you a lowball offer in the hopes that you'll take it. I don't put my email in CL ads anymore - just my cell number. It has cut down on 99% of the foolishness I used to have to deal with. If someone is really interested they want to talk to you as soon as possible and not keep sending email.
