Trying to work through a problem

Life is a weird bowl of soup isn't it? Sometimes its so tasty and sweet and sometimes just plain crap.

After 27 years of good stable career type employment, I've been going through a period where I just can't find suitable work. I've tried everything from driving truck to accounting. I hate it all. I don't seem to want to dedicate 70-80 hours each week to work anymore. I used to have so much energy for work. Unless I win the lottery I sure as hell can't retire. I'm starting to become scared. I can't imagine my wife is going to keep putting up with me changing jobs all the time, not to mention how bad it makes your resume look. What the hell do I do? Right now I'm selling bedding in a mattress store. Plenty of people are happy selling bedding. Why am I not happy selling bedding? I actually like beds. I just think it is so freakin boring to stand around in a retail store all day trying to make enough commission. Oh man, I'm in trouble.

Sorry to rant. This crap is getting me down. :(

I know a couple of people who are going through somewhat similar things. They know that they dissatisfied with what they are doing, but have no idea what sort of job they want to do. And this causes them a great deal of stress. And everyone keeps telling them, "Try and look for something you really enjoy." But they can't think about anything that they enjoy that makes them any decent amount of money.

So I don't know.

You enjoy pro audio/recording/music. Is this a field you might enjoy? I dunno. Video or audio editing? Maybe you can get a job with Sweetwater? Or you can be a chauffeur for some of the guys who write for EQ? :D

According to the Mayan calender, we only have 7 years left anyway...so who cares?

All that aside, I started a savings account where I simply put a small amount in it each month (I mean small too). Funny thing about compound intrest, it takes 15 years for the ball to start rolling but when it does, holy {censored}!

It is never too late to start a good retirement account..the last thing you will rely on is Social security. It won't cut it...and you can take that statement to the bank.

Also...see if you can find a hobby that can turn into a profession. Perhaps not music but something you enjoy..as in possibally building something useful. I know a guy that made 300K last year building speaker stands.

Is there any job you'd love to TRY but are not qualified for, but could do with experience?

Maybe you could find something like this and do some volunteer work to test the waters or make contacts?

I think your geographical location might not be helping, but I don't know anything about that area either.

Anyway, just an idea.

Thanks Deanmass. I've been pondering the same thing, and you are right, this geographical location does not help. However, I married a farm girl as she is as far from the farm as she is planning on going.

It's a depressing dilema for sure, but as our maintenance man, Gottlieb says (that's really his name) "everything works out in the end".

Hey bbach. That tip you gave me about getting a better mattress has really helped me sleep better. I'm amazed by how I can just lay down and stay still until I go to sleep. Instead of tossing and turning all the time. I'm still not sleeping perfectly. I still wake up after sleeping for 6 hours, which doesn't seem like enough, but I think that's because of other reasons.

I live in Des Moines, Iowa. It seems like there's so many guys here who say that the reason they live in Des Moines is because their girlfriend or wife is from Des Moines. I think it's a very common thing to live somewhere just because of a girl.

Me, I think that a better mattress helps a lot with getting to sleep. But I think it would really help me sleep better if I also got laid. I'm 25 years old (soon to be 26 on December 5) and I'm still a virgin. I think the last time I kissed a girl on the lips was sometime in the late '90s. I don't want to stomp all over your thread, maybe this topic deserves it's own thread. I've read somewhere that human beings are the only animals where sex and sleeping are connected. For other animals these are two separate proccesses.

If I could just get a good night's sleep without having sex, maybe I wouldn't care about sex. And all the extra baggage of being in a relationship could really suck (man, I got issues!):o

Well bbach, you're definitely helping people like Mr. Donovan, so that's gotta be some consolation.

I bet if you were to read a good real motivating book or two such as "Awaken the Giant Within" by Tony Robbins or whatever's a good one these days, well a lot of times those things can seriously point you in the right direction and you could find yourself enthusiastically pursuing a new career plan and achieving significant goals in the near future.

It's worked for me before...hmmmm....I probably oughta read some more of that stuff myself and take it to the next level come to think of it.:p

(Awaken The Giant Within had a semi cheesy lil bit in it here and there I thought, but hey just ignore those couple o' sentences)

I bet if Mr. Donovan read it he'd be Joe Casanova Lady Killer with a humming bachelor pad and sound sleep every night.

:D

Donovan I think that's great. As far as having a girl is concerned, that's a tougher problem than the one I'm having. After all, I can keep submitting resumes but I don't think women accept them when it come to sex do they? Maybe they do. I wish I could give you some advice on that matter but all I know is I just simply got lucky and met my wife. In fact, if she didn't decide to hang around, I'd probably be going from an empty career to an empty house and that would be worse yet. I can tell you this though, if I were you, I'd go online and look up the work number of a sexy young escort in Minneapolis. Then I'd make sure she was a full service excort and I'd drive up there and let her know I have not had a lot of experience. For a couple hundred bucks you could start building some confindence in that matter and you might find that she would actually take pride in helping. Wear a condum. (I'll probably get bashed for suggesting such a thing, but I don't really mind).

I'm going to have to take some of my interests in life, such as music or sports, and find a way to make a living in that industry, preferably as a self employed person because I hate being told what to do. That's a serious personal problem I have and I cannot seem to change it. No boss = me happy. Good thing my wife isn't a bossy type.

I'll likely be in Clear Lake, Iowa sometime before Christmas. I'm supposed to visit the Serta factory. They haven't told me when. How far is Des Moines from Clear Lake? We could grab a bite to eat before I head back to ND. I had planned on staying in Mason City the first night (some small town by Clear Lake I guess) and then taking in the tour the next day. I was going to drive up into Minneapolis and spend the night and then head on home. I don't know if my wife will be able to go along. She can't seem to get much time off work because they are so short handed. Plus, how would she spend any time with her boyfriend if I'm never out of town?:D

Great suggesstion. Sometimes motivation is what a person needs. I used to read all the damn time. Now it seems like a newspaper and magazine and that's about it. Wonder what happened there?

Maybe start a partime job selling something closer to what you love...........MUSICAL GEAR?

Do you consider yourself a GOOD, MEDIUM OR POOR SALESMAN. How do you compare with the other guys in your store? If you are a good salesman, rather than completely walking away, perhaps start part time selling something that you love. If that works better for you, perhaps 6 months or so down the road you will be able to walk away from MattressWorld..

If things get tight here ,after I retire, I may consider selling cars or musical gear. I may even go back to school for a real estate sales license. (I already did the vaccums, and Fuller Brush over 30 years ago. Hopefully I will have people knocking my doors down just to get drum lessons, but I'm also thinking of plan B, plan C etc.)

Des Moines is about 2 hours south of Mason City. Just get on I-35 and go south until you hit Des Moines. You should come visit. I wish I could offer a place to stay, but I live in a small studio apartment that's barely big enough for just me. You should be able to find some cheap hotel rates in Des Moines. Certainly cheaper than in Minneapolis.

I've been starting to meet some girls through MySpace. One of them goes to the same school I do. So I'll see how that works out.

Bbach, I was just thinking. Rather than having to add an extra leg to your trip, I could just make a day trip and drive to Mason City. I'd really like to get out of Des Moines for just a little bit.

There's an Andrew Lloyd Wright house in Mason City that I've wanted to see for a long time.

Mason City is also the hometown of Meredith Willson, who wrote the classic musical "The Music Man". The fictional town "River City" in the musical is supposedly modeled after Mason City. The city even built a tourist trap to honor him.

Oh yeah, Mason City was founded by Free Masons, which is how it got it's name.

I've been to Clear Lake, Iowa multiple times when I was little. The name is really a misnomer, since the Lake is one of the dirtiest lakes I've ever seen.

Lake Okoboji in Northwest Iowa is much better, and is one of the clearest lakes in the world.

I'll try not to bug you with too many useless facts about Iowa, if we meet up. Just let me know when to shut up.

Unless you are talking about a thin-walled house with a simple-minded structure and grandiose adornment (and a vast stock of kitty litter), I think you mean Frank.

I would be interested in hearing more about your state. I'll keep you posted. I have not heard anything yet for certain as to the dates of travel. It might also be that I have to hook up with some salespeople from our Fargo, ND store and travel with them. I do want to stop in a shopping mall in Burnsville, MN. I bought my wife a vase there and my mother in law loves it so much I thought I'd get her one for Christmas. Anyway, I'll let you know and we will hook up if we can. Who knows, it might be after the new year.

70-80 hours a week? Well there's your problem. Try a job where you work 40 - or less - and I bet you'll hate it a lot less.

Several years ago I took a job making almost double of what I do now and I was also working about 5 times more with one day off. I went from working in a friendly, relaxed setting to one where everyone was on edge and then there was one particular individual who just made life hell for everyone there. So I took her on and wrote her a letter at the suggestion of my boss. Long story short, she ran the place, not the boss so I was asked to resign. I refused so they fired me. Same thing isn`t it?

As the universe would have it, my original job asked me to return because the person they hired to replace me decided this was not for him. So I`m back where I started in a way but I don`t look at as a setback, its actually a blessing. I love being back where I am respected, I`m close to home, close enough to be there in 12 minutes walking and of course the work is a lot less. The best part...I got a $20g raise which put me close to what I was making at the other place.

When I was fired, I felt like you did: BAD. I felt like a loser but I also knew I did nothing wrong except speak up. So I`ve learned a lot and I also realized that being back where I started is actually the best thing for me and my family and again, as the universe would have it, I am now able to work in Real Estate which is another passion I have and it does not interfere with music. None of this would have been possible if the other higher paying job worked out.

So where does this leave you?

Things have a way of working out. Its tough but you have to trust that higher source. We all have a name for it. So whatever it is you call it, trust it, pray/talk to it and then give thanks for all the blessings.

Pray and move your feet in the meantime.

Much Success!

Mid life crisis time eh. I can relate.

In the once popular book titled " What Color is your parachute" the author maintains that happiness is most highly correlated to living in a location you enjoy rather than having your dream job. If you want to be happy he advises folks to:

1) decide wher they want to live

2) move there

3) Go for the job of your dreaams -but comprmise on this in order to stay in the locale that turns you on.

Maybe you'd enjoy selling mattresses in Honolulu?

I was thinking Belize. But, alas, I cannot leave my two girls and they won't come with. :( How could I get along without those two clowns?
