OCTOBER 2009 SHOWCASE Thread :: Finished work, videos, career news, gossip...

Here's the Official Showcase Thread (Oct 2009) where you can post your completed projects, links to finished works you want your pals here in the SW forum to hear, promo videos, or just generally shameless self-hype that you're far too professional and courteous to post in the main forum.

POST 'EM IF YOU GOT 'EM!

:)

3 new songs on our myspace!

Preacher's Daughter, Light Of Day, and Southern Cross.

they are three of six we are attempting to record, it has been a long unpleasant process and i am only so happy with the final result, but i'm ecstatic to have something new up online!

as of right now, i can't access the site because myspace claims it's "Down for routine maintenance" which doesn't make any sense to me, but i assume it'll come back eventually.

Down for scheduled/routine maintenance translates to: "Damn! Something's wrong and we have no idea where it is but we'll find it when we find it and get this tub back in the water STAT. Honest."

You still can't quite ignore MySpace, but maybe it's time to explore some of the other sites that offer better quality sound and fewer restrictions where you can send folks once you've hooked 'em in via your MySpace page. Places like ReverbNation, iLike, Last.fm, Soundclick, and slugs of others (you can find a long list in the Rules/Resources sticky at the top of this forum's listings) offer different, but almost universally higher levels of quality, generally with fewer restrictions on number, size, etc.

yeah i've been giving a lot of thought to that, i saw someone who just rocked a blog, but they had a ReverbNation player embedded that played their music, i thought that was great! but i have no idea how to do it, because i haven't tried, but i should probably try.

i get to hear enough complaints about hosting companies to know that most problems are just worth ignoring until the colony of ants living in the server migrates or dies for the winter.

Blue has kicked me to the curb "once again" :-( I didn't actually know this thread existed? But I'll use it from now on? Presented for your enjoyment, and NO BLUE IT'S NOT SILENT NIGHT! It's Oh Holly Night!!?? And while night does exist in both classic songs? Silent Night is more "silent" Holy Night has a few holes in it? But I tried to plug them as best I could?

At the top, 62 tracks, Oh Holy Night (not Oh Silent Night, K?)

Hopefully it will help make you feel all Christmasy and stuff? Not Schroogy?

Comments appreciated. Blue? God bless us, every one. :-)

Ah... sorry, Robby. I thought you knew about these threads. They're what I live for... since I can hear everyone's music without the burden of having to form a public opinion. :D

Anyhow, it's a very lovely version of It's Not Silent Night!

(Funny, I was sure this carol was called "Oh Holy Night" instead of It's Not Silent Night! But, you know, I'm not infallible. ;) )

Make sure you post this in the next two Showcase Threads as well (I try to start them on the first of the month -- anyone can PM me if I'm late).

And, heck, if you're still feeling in the afterglow of the holidays, please feel free to post it in the January Showcase as well. :D [That ought to be good for a few extra posts, right there!]

PS... Since you asked for comments -- and since, in this anything goes thread I can actually address non-songwriting issues guilt-free -- I would suggest that your vocals are not loud enough. You've got a lot of foundation. You can put a fair bit more voice up there and still be far from top heavy.

Listen to some classic pop records and put yourself in the producer's shoes -- and forget for a moment that you're not Sinatra and you're probably convinced you don't deserve the spotlight... look -- the spotlight is there and someone's gotta fill it, eh? ;)

In this kind of pop, the vocal is big. Your vocal here is up to the job. Put your hand on that fader (or mouse on that virtual fader) and push that lead and the support vox up a good amount.

Now... one more thing... I wasn't sure if the very compressed, super dry vocal treatment was working as well for me as I would have wanted. I might experiment with small to tiny amounts of reverb and/or an ultra-discreet amount of echo. I know. You busted your ass to get that sound... but, again, listen to the classic pop recordings... I'm not saying drench it. But you've got a big psychoacoustic space going here (it's gotta be to have that theatre sized orchestra)... so it's unnatural -- even if the singer is standing smack in front of us -- to hear the singer with no reverb around him.

Thanks Blues, I was just bustin your balls. If they weren't so damn BIG they'd be a harder target! hehehehe Not really angry.

I've changed that damn mix 5 times since my last post here, I wish I had more skills at the "engineering aspect?" I feel like I can write a pretty good song? And I'm a singer damit! No one will dispute that. I can play guitar ok? And bass, keys, etc... And I feel I can produce? But my weak link (IMO) is the engineering aspect? Well, it's like if you're the baiter on a fishing boat? And you work your way up to the "master" position? If you do something long enough? You can't help but get better at it? So I'm hoping that the longer I do it, the better I'll get at it? That's why I'm such a GOOD stalker... :-)

I have the final mix up for Oh Holy Night, it's changed "massivly". I've learned more about mixing from this project than anything I've ever done...

At the top,

Nice Robby! I particularly like the singing. You're quite a vocalist.

I would've liked to hear a tympani hit and cymbal crash at the end of the tympani crescendos.

Good job.

Best, John
