Good/Great guitarists in Bands you don't particularly like!
tlbonehead replied to JTEES4's topic in Electric Guitars
Nils Lofgren in E street band.that's probably a good call. While I do like Bruce, Nils certainly has a "governor" on his capabilities when playing in that band. -

How? Honestly, page is the worst musician in zep. Granted he write most of the stuff, but bonham and jpj are both exceptional. Page is just pagehe was pretty good at times in his day. I just don't care much for Zep. See how this works? -

I'll start with Neil Schoen in Journey.that's a pretty good one. Years ago I would have said Zep. -

Why did the JTM 45 catch on and not the Fender Showman
tlbonehead replied to jpnyc's topic in Electric Guitars
I don't think the arena players are really pumping that much sound through their stacks - they would be killing people down in the front rows. The "wall of sound" is mostly a bunch of fake cabs for show. Most of the volume comes from the PA. So when you think about it, what's the point of an amp that is loud enough to melt the shell off a nuclear reactor? Can't really use it? now. But I believe the OP was referring to "then". -
I've just recently changed my Stratocaster's strings gauge from .9 to .10 because I felt like I wanted a thicker sounding. .9 was a bit too soft sounding and too thin for me. However, I found now the strings tension is extremely tight that it makes bending VERY difficult. Now very often I tend to bend out of tune (a semi tone lower) even when I try to bend really hard with the right posture. And it result in my fingertip's skin are falling off, and within a few hours of playing my fingertips are already hurting so bad that I can't bend anymore, and I have to wait till the next day to be able to play again. I play quite often, it shouldn't hurt this bad, and I think .10 is alright for me, and I've used .10 before, but it's just that this time the tension becomes so tight that makes bending extremely difficult. I don't know is it the setup or what. Is there a way I can release the strings tension and make it less tight by myself? I thought the action is already pretty low, but if lowering the action is the only way to solve this problem, how do I lower the action?lower action makes bending more difficult, not easier.

$60 out of pocket for VHT "warranty" repair
tlbonehead replied to Grantus's topic in Electric Guitars
Federal Express, all the way. I was shipping all my stuff through UPS and getting HOSED on costs AND the gorillas who work there were consistently breaking things and leaving shipments in the rain, etc. This was over a 10 year period, so it's not like I was having a kneejerk reaction. Mazi Bee advised me to get a Fed Ex account and I have never looked back. Better shipping rates, better handling, better tracking, and WAYYYYYY better customer service. After 4 years with Fed Ex, I will never go back to UPS. I hate when I buy something from Amazon and they choose to ship UPS, because I can almost guarantee the box will arrive looking like the big brown truck drove over it. Not all shipping companies are created equal, that's for sure! I've noticed just the opposite in my area, actually. I get/send several packages each week on average. -

UPS is always more expensive than FedEx, even if you have a UPS account.nope. UPS is noticeably cheaper for me, with an account. -
$60 out of pocket for VHT "warranty" repair

This is common practice. I dont know of a single company who pays for the shipping charges on a warranty claim. I do have a couple questions. One is who did you ship through? Many times fed ex and the post office are much cheaper than UPS and they treat your stuff better. I just sent a 50lb head through fed ex for $36. The other question is since you knew the tubes were not under warranty and depending on the issue did you check the tubes for failure?yep, the speaker that I sent in for repair I have to pay shipping to them. They pay shipping back. That is pretty much the norm. -

why so much? I just sent a powered PA speaker to the east coast for repair for $19.91 and that was over 40lbs. -
Unsung heroes of the Fender amp family?

I also would say Bandmaster, then maybe Tremolux -
Anybody buy alot from Tube Depot?? Other recommendations?
tlbonehead replied to doomsdaymachine's topic in Amps
Lord Valve is definitely my favorite for tubes. Dougs seems fine too. I'd like to give Laura some business but she doesn't carry much for EL84s. -
Anyone ever grow out of heavy metal as you get older?
tlbonehead replied to uppercasenoises's topic in Amps
never really grew into it. -
because they can. a lot of people bash their speakers just because they are peavey speakers, not because they're bad speakers. many of them are actually pretty good. Scorpions and BWs especially are great values in speakers. As for guitar speakers, they are on par with the budget Eminence and similar that companies like Fender, etc, use.

Anybody remember that MTV awards thing they were on where they had decided to play a certain song and at the lest second CC decided on his own that he wanted to play something else. Everyone started in on one song and CC started in on the one he wanted to play. Funny.

thank you guys, this is a great forum because of helpful people like you!personally, the best high gain Marshall tones available in those amps come from the Soldano SLO model, IMO. I really like that one. I would use it for Talk Dirty. A bit of reverb and delay and you're set. I believe CC used a Rat, which would help, but not totally necessary. I also found a lot of his stuff pretty pleasant to my ears.

Danelectro Cool Cat Transparent Overdrive?any of these may or may not work depending on the situation and how you use them. -

again, just add a tubescreamer like a Bad Monkey or CM-2 with the Rat and it should get you there no problem...not necessarily. -

.once again, if your rhythm tone is pretty overdriven already.Unless its pedal overdrive. Then just put the volume boost after that pedal.. -

Push all sliders to the top. Honestly. don't really have to go that far. Use the EQ section to shape your desired lead tone and the gain slider for the amount of boost you want. -

eq pedal dano fish n chips is good and cheap great useful little pedal. Of course if you are using a really hot overdriven rhythm tone, the boost has to come after the spot of the saturation. -
I quit eBay because of their god-damned PayPal only policy. shouldn't be mandatory but it is easily my favorite method as a buyer or seller
