Members Beach Hound
We have a great female vocalist who can really move air and get it going. We looked at the set list and realized it was too heavy on the slower stuff and needed to bump up the tempo more. We added a few like Black Horse and the Cherry tree, 455 rocket and looked at stuff like Black velvet but I am looking for suggestions for both a blues based set and a more rock/country set. She's not a metal singer so that just wouldn't fly. thoughts and thanks
Members JohnnyRockit
In our act, the female backup singers take a few songs every show. I don't know what genre of music you do or the age of your audience, but here goes: - Black Velvet - Shake a Hand - Old Time Rock & Roll - Oh! Darling - Why Haven't I Heard From You - I Try to Think About Elvis - Anything by Jerry Lee Lewis - Been trying to get them to do Led Z's "Rock n' Roll - They also pull off an upbeat version of Steamroller Blues really well. Members SpaceNorman
Consider looking at some classic Motown type stuff - Aretha, Smokey Robinson, Martha Reeves, etc. There are some great tunes in there that a female vocalist who can "really move air" can sink their teeth into. Members GCDEF
We do some Melissa Etheridge stuff that goes over well. Like the Way I Do particularly, but she has a lot to choose from. Janis Joplin obviously. Pat Benatar has some good bluesy stuff if you get away from her pop stuff. For country, things like Carrie Underwood's before he cheats, or Don't know My Last Name. Members Chicken Monkey
Not enough people do "Son of a Preacher Man", but it always went over really well for us.
Members pbaughman
Son of a preacher man - Dusty Springfield - is not blues.Check out our Blues Society Youtube Channel and click on Jill West's videos. Almost all her stuff is up tempo and Bluesy. Check out this song : "Dirty Old Woman" and "You Can Have My Husband". I don't know if she's doing those songs on youtube or not. They are good ones that the local girls do here. Some Other Jill West Videos Check out Denise Lasalle on Amazon - lots of fun stuff
Members cherri
For blusier female leads we are currently covering: Susan Tedeschi - EvidenceShemekia Copeland - 2AMRoxanne Potvin - Hitting on Nothing I'd sing that material all night but then the audience starts saying "Play Something We Know". In the more mainstream arena, several of our upbeat tunes are originally sung by males (Gin Blossoms, Blues Traveler, Sister Hazel) but the lyrics aren't gender specific and they go over well. Members TrickyBoy
Proud Mary - Tina and Ike - We do this with just drums guitar and bass and it goes over great We have a female singer who is definitely not metal, and Sweet Child O' Mine can really be done well without a metal voice. Members Chicken Monkey
Son of a preacher man - Dusty Springfield - is not blues. Are you saying it doesn't fit in somewhere in the blues/rock/country neighborhood the OP is asking for?

Members Polyphonoise
Linda Ronstadt's version of "Silver Threads and Golden Needles" on the country side. That tears it up.

Members chadd
Heard Melissa Etheridge cover Honky Tonk Woman and it worked. If she has a little bit of growl it's worth considering.
