Members New Trail
...I'm worried. The only places doing good business is one place that is actually outside of city limits, so smoking is allowed, and which caters to an older, country, two-steppin', line-dancin' crowd, and another place that has a HUGE outdoor beer garden (where you can smoke) and that caters to a much younger mostly non-dancing crowd. The other in-town non-smoking places are slow to dead regardless of the type of band. I'll be really surprised if those places survive. Of course, it IS Summer so there are more things for folks to do, and the economy is still bad, so who knows. We'll see, I guess, but I'm worried! Members wheresgrant3
The economy still isn't great here either although NY hasn't been hit as hard as other areas of the country. This is an expensive place to live and to be honest the biggest complaint/deterrent I hear from people who follow us are outrageous drink prices. A few weekends ago we were off for two weeks and I made my rounds as a 'civillian' stopping by a few rooms we don't play anymore (hence: I had to pay for drinks) and I was floored how much money I blew in a single night. One round of Jagerbombs (4 people) went for $40... . I've joked before that people that follow my band spend more per capita than those that follow other bands 3-4x's. I believe it... I also understand why we see people dissapear for months on end... only to reappear after 'taking a break' from going out.
Members rangefinder
The two weeks when school is getting out for the summer is not likely to be a representative sample... depending on where you are, it might not be time to worry just yet. Members bigboy78
Do you guys have poker machines (slot machines?) in the bars/clubs in the US? In Australia we have no smoking allowed anywhere inside a venue, but all the clubs/pubs have "outdoor" areas and filled with poker machines. So you can smoke, drink and gamble.......can you guess where the crowds are? Not watching a band that's for sure.

Members kmart
Do you guys have poker machines (slot machines?) in the bars/clubs in the US? Not in most. Nevada is an aberration: for the vast majority of the rest of the US, even if the state has one, two or even several legal casinos, poker/slot machines are still not legal elsewhere. Actaully, let me re-phrase that... A poker machine or the like FOR GAMBLING PURPOSES in the venue is illegal, but everybody knows most of those machines are FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY. As far as I know, Nevada in the only place in the US where, inside a typical bar/nightclub (not talking about casinos), there might be people sitting around the mainbar playing the imbedded video poker machines while the band in on stage. In fact, most are that way. In Nevada, having a liquor license without a gaming license is considered a poor business model. Although some of the bigger, more upscale nightclub/dance clubs don't have gaming. In the rest of the US, gaming is restricted to Indian reservations so there aren't the corner-bar-with-slots set ups you see in Nevada. The only other exception might be Atlantic City, New Jersey? Never been there, but my understanding is it is more like the Indian casinos where gaming is restricted to the casinos themselves.

Members chadd
Summer has always been a slow season around here. Unless you're playing benefits, weddings and carnivals.
Members KeysBear
we've had to get out of our comfort zone to find gigs for the Summer. Everything is slow and from what I observe people will go out maybe once a week and that's it. One bar owner closed one of his locations and is doing his best to keep the other one open. Now he's got the barmaids wearing bustiers which may or may not be good for business but certainly makes it more entertaining for the band. Members JoeDirt
What's the difference? No idea why slots are not allowed, but they aren't. Strictly video poker and video keno.
Members rangefinder
No idea why slots are not allowed, but they aren't. Strictly video poker and video keno. Probably because there is at least some element of choice/skill involved. But who knows.
Members modulusman
Montana also allows live poker. This is usually off in different room so that the bands don't disturb the players.

Gambling laws are a lot like gun control laws. The majority of folks involved in writing them don't really have any idea what they're talking about.
