Outdoor gig in 2 hours...

We had one in Southern MD a couple weeks back. It was an afternoon, on the water, bikini contest gig. The stage faced South so we were in the direct sun the whole time. We were all wiped-out when we finished...there were hot bikini chicks on stage and I was more interested in a cold beer...that's how hot it was.

Thankfully we had storms this morning and then another batch of light rain right around noon...cooled things off quite a bit: now it's only low-to-mid 80's instead of mid-to-upper 90's (reaching 104 by the car thermometer) like it's been all week.

Off to hump gear into the vehicle in a few minutes for tonight's gig myself...

101 here today. And here is our gig... award for one of the worst loadin's you could ever ask for...

What you can't see at this picture is how far the blue 'gang plank' (150ft in length). We have to break things out of large cases (no room on the boat) hike it up the plank, thru the happy hour crowd, to the far left corner of the boat. Fun times.

going up to 102 today here. We have one of our few indoor shows tonight, but the place is a crab house and it's always hot and steamy in there so tonight is going to be worse. The load in isn't too bad but it'll still be mid 90s and humid when we're unloading the trucks. We're outdoors on Tuesday at one of our casino gigs, and the state fair is going on at their site so the crowds, traffic, and parking will be a nightmare. Luckily the heat is supposed to break before then and the high is only forcasted as 90, and by downbeat at 9pm it should be somewhat cooler.

Yeah, the West Coast seems to be the only place in the country NOT getting this nasty heat. Not that it would matter much to me today anyway. We're playing outside, but it's for a beach wedding up here at the lake. If anything, we're probably 5-10 degrees COOLER than our normal temps for this time of year. Prediction is for 81 and sunny :thu:

Yep...it was rough yesterday here in San Diego as well. 78 with a light breeze.

Well THAT didn't work out as planned...

Apparently while I was inside all day thinking it had remained cooler, it instead decided to get hot again...and with all the rain from earlier in the day, it was mega-humid as well.

As I arrived near the venue at 7:00, temp was around 96 with super-high humidity.

AWESOME load-in weather.

We were inside, but the place was apparently trying to save $ on their AC bills (I suspect $ issues; they no longer accept credit cards, and there was some 'confusion' from the bar manager and band leader on what the pay was supposed to be...Not getting into that now).

In any case, it was only mildly cool inside, and once the gear hump was done and we had everything inside, I was drenched with sweat.

Awesome.

Of course, bodies started showing up and the place got warmer and warmer, and more and more humid as the night progressed. Not even 4 songs into the second set, I could tell all the moisture on my hands/sticks was going to mean blisters all over my hands (Have played in high-humidity like that before, and know the signs)...so out came the drum gloves.

Miserable rest of the night as far as comfort while playing.

Packed and loaded all my gear, came in to help the rest of the band with theirs because they are all organizationally retarded, and can never figure out what to put into what case in what order, etc...rest of load-out didn't start for another 20 minutes or so, and by that time, we were in the middle of monsoon-like rain: apparently a Chicago record for volume in one span (7 1/2 inches at O'Hare).

So I got to help load-out in the middle of that. And then drive home.

And of course, FOUR different routes I attempted for that...shut down w/police roadblocks due to flooding, etc., expressway and surface roads alike.

Took me 75 minutes to cover about 13 miles at a time (2:30 AM) when there was virtually no traffic on the roads.

Seems I may have been better off staying home last night.

Survived the gig--although I was totally out of gas by the end of the 2nd (of 3) set. However the crowd was also thin because, well, who would want to be outside in that weather?

Anyway, better than rain I guess...

And the load in was the easiest ever--stage door went directly out to a back parking lot. Much better than a 150-ft gang plank.

Hope y'all survived yours okay. :thu:

just got in from a 3:30 to 7:30 pm gig at a very similar waterfront place to the picture above, here in Boynton Beach. The sun was to our backs and reflecting off the water behind us the entire time. With 20 minutes to go in the last set the drummer declared that he couldn't feel his hands anymore. We told him to keep time with whatever his feet could give us. He did. We were all drenched in sweat and swear it was the hottest day and the hottest gig we have every played.

Played outdoors last night, 7:30-9:00. The temps weren't that awful, once we started playing (the sun had gone behind some trees) but the bugs came out in force once the sun went down completely. Fortunately, the sound guy had some bug spray that he brought around to us while we were playing, and he was savvy enough not to spray it on my guitar. What a week, though!

Did a 4 hour (1-5) outside gig yesterday. Under a pop up tent. Management went out and bought 2 oscillating floor fans, had them assembled just before we started. I was worn out by the end. The pay and the compliments helped . . a little.

I'm getting ready for another outside gig today, but its a bit cooler, (a bit).

Played a beach party yesterday afternoon .... sweltering hot (high 90's) and high humidity. We were set up on a deck overlooking a small "all sports" inland lake - had a crowd of roughly 80 people enjoying BBQ, beers and watersports. Lots of good food and cold beer. Starting playing as the day was winding down .... ended up with a flotilla of pontoon boats from all around the lake (20-30 of 'em!) tied together 70ft from shore as we played. Our host's circle of friends included a number of musicians - so we had lots of special guests. We ended up playing a pantload of requests. Played the gig barefoot wearing a bathing suit and a wife beater with a cooler full of beer within arms reach. Spent the couple of breaks we took in the lake - swam out to the pontoon flotilla to do shots. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday afternoon and evening

Parties at the lake where they have a live band are great. Its amazing how far the sound travels over water. A mile or two easy.

Reminds me of a fourth of july gig I did in Lewes, DE. 95 degrees before the 'heat index' of the 90% humidity - which made it feel like HELL. and the gig had no cover. It was an afternoon on a porch in the sun. I had to peel my bass off of my frint for the set breaks, and was no good for several days after...

I'll take my lovely dry heat here in Vegas.. Although, above 100 degrees, hot is HOT no matter how dry it is...

when it gets that hot and humid, talcum powder turns to paste!

Our indoor gig was pretty brutal. By the time I was done setting up my shirt was stuck to me and soaked thru. I brought a couple extra shirts along because I knew that's how it'd be. It was a crab place- so already steamy and hot. At least my fan on stage was blowing and it wasn't unbearable.

Outdoors tomorrow night, state fair so lots of people but only supposed to be around 80 by downbeat at 9pm. Saturday, we have another outdoor gig and it's saying 97 for a high. It'll be a stifling setup but by downbeat it should be cooled down some.
