Members Secret Seasons
If I'm going to be trying to properly record w/ a Super Reverb sometime in the next few weeks? Got a SM57, just now really learning about mic placement and such, so I guess the 57 would basically be right at the cone and then i'd have some kind of 2nd mic a little further back. anything in this list of stuff on sale at MF worth jumping on? http://www.musiciansfriend.com/navigation?N=100001+708483 thanks!! Members AnderMocs
I couldn't find anything that was truly worth it for sane price. I would love a blue mic but they are way expensive even on sale.
Members heartben
for a 57 i personally would have the mic basically between the center and the ouside of the speaker ( between the cone and the outside edge) with the mic pointed towards the center. if that was too confusing let me know and ill try to be more specific if i can. Members Secret Seasons
ok well i don't think i'm ready to jump into condenser mics and since i don't need one for vocals i just got one of these to double mic the super-

I was hoping for a 100-150 dollar condenser.

Phil O'Keefe
The MXL 4000 is a good contender for a condenser on the cheapz... the BLUE Bluebird is a very good mic for the money. The ATM650 is somewhat similar to a 57, although a bit better IMHO. I find myself using the Audix i5 over a SM57 more often than not these days... it is similar in concept to a 57, but has better bass, and I just like the sound of it better. Do you ever record acoustic guitar and / or vocals? If so, get the Bluebird or MXL. If you don't, those mikes would still work well on a guitar cabinet, but you may want to get another dynamic, or a ribbon mic instead. I saw that MXL R44 at NAMM, but really didn't get a chance to hear it... so no comment either way on that one, beyond saying that $99 for a ribbon mic is pretty darned cheap. Members eor
i prefer a fathead ii for my secondary mic needs. cascade makes them. they are ribbons, though, so be careful. as for placement, learn to use one mic before you go to two. start with the 57 right on the grill. closer to the center of the cone = brighterfurther from the center of the cone = darkerfurther from the grill = more of your room sound put that bitch straight on and move it around from left to right until you understand the positions and find what you like. do that before you start angling the mic. 45 degrees, when you get there. moving the mic up and down shouldn't do much, unless your speaker has a sweet spot. love, eor
Members Secret Seasons
alright, word, i know most of this but i appreciate the help. lets say i've got mic #1 placed just right. if I am set on adding mic #2-- what now? it'd be easier if it was a smaller amp. should I be focusing 100% on one speaker or placing a mic further back for the full on 4x10 experience or will that get lost no matter what? Members eor
i like the second one about a foot back, and use that one to fill in the lower frequencies. or you can pick it up and move towards and away from the first mic. homemade phaser! but if you decide to go with 2 mics, make sure you get one that will play nicely with your 57. phase issues and rejection patterns and all that. not to be capt obvious, but get the first one right were you like it and then {censored} around with the second mic. see how the second mic interacts with your amp and with the other mic. both mics on the same spot, on different speakers, on behind the cab, the second one at various distances out in front... it is all valid. love, eor

For electric guitar I'd use it as a room mic, but it's really well suited for male vocals and sounds great with acoustic guitar. They're really well made, and are kind of the pricier studio's crack at a lower budget mic, rather than a brand that specialises in cheaper stuff. They used to be double the price, well worth stretching the budget to. Looks great too, totally shallow of me but I do like the look as a bonus.ALSO: Mine came with this popshield:I'm guessing that's going to be your free gift. Members RadioSilence
i know its not what you want but 6x Shure pg58, 6x stands and 6x leads for $180 is a good deal. for micing guitar cabs placing one mic further back will give you more ambient/room sound and one close to the cone will give you more direct sound - you can then mix a good balance of the two.you can also place one mic behind the speaker and one in front. make sure you reverse the phase on one of them though. it would do you well to do a little research on why you'd do this, also try to find out about the 3:1 rule and proximity effect. you'll make better recordings if you do. actually, go here http://www.shure.com/ProAudio/Resources/HowToUse/index.htmand download the Microphone Techniques for Recording PDF
