I don't know what the big deal about the studio going up for sale is. Someone will buy it. If you look at the projects done there, its reputation alone is a cash cow.

Hopefully someone like McCartney will buy it, as it's a real site of cultural heritage in this country and should be preserved as one. The big point is how EMI seem to dismiss it and the ridiculous quote in the Guardian about how you can just record on a laptop anyway.

Recording that way was fine for their material. Had they been trying to record a 50 piece orchestra in the same way, how do you think it would have sounded?

you're really hung up on this 50 piece orchestra thing...

do you hire 50 piece orchestras for your albums a lot?

From a non musicians standpoint, I can see their point of view. We have the tendency to read something by someone that doesn't know what they are talking about and make it into a thread 25 pages long and beat one sentence into the ground.

...as we should! I know {censored} all about media law. If I were asked to give an opinion on media law to a newspaper, my reply would be cretinous and I would expect my opinion to be rightfully ground into the dirt by media lawyers everywhere. It kinda says it all that the article from the Guardian doesn't ask a musician about their opinion of the sale but goes for a lawyer who talks about the 'brand'.

They call the person that is there to give a statement.

We also make conclusions that are probably not correct. Print media is consistently going downhill in the US and I assume that it's the same way in the uk. Writers will print anything short of a blatant lie just to be read or noticed in some way. I get the feeling that this is the case here.

is that the same confusing land you can't come to grasp with where everyone but you uses and likes MP3s

Yes. Mine is the land that likes CDs and vinyl. The other place is the one where MP3s are loved, where HDTV is considered essential, where McDonalds is viewed as decent food, where the release of a new Michael Bay film is considered cause for excitement, where George W. Bush's reign is looked back with fondness, and where Megan Fox is hailed as a good actress.

Welcome to my town, population 1 idiot and a solid state amplifier. :D

Hmm, I guess I live in a confusing land too. I like vinyl and cd, but I also consider HDTV essential (if I'm going to be watching tv, that is), I am OK with McDonald's but I'd rather cook at home if I have the time.... I'll put up with MP3 for it's convenience but it's not my listening format of choice, for the reasons you also listed....

OH, and on topic: I hope someone buys Abbey Road and keeps it as a studio, it has so much history, it would be a shame to lose it, not even accounting for how the space sounds and how good it is technically.

I need to derail this thread for a moment.

When did the CD become a benchmark for audio quality? Just because you have 1000 CD's that cost $15 a piece does not equal high fidelity. Optical imaging was a poor format 25 years ago and it's a poor (now obsolete) format today.

Sorry, back on topic.

Sorry, back on topic.

Nobody has said that CDs are high fidelity. Mp3s are a regressive format in terms of audio quality compared to CDs and vinyl to my ears. In the visual world, there is progression with HDTV etc or the move from DVD to Blu-Ray. Why isn't that followed in the audio world?

You say CDs are obsolete. What's trumped them in terms of quality and sales? I don't see DVD albums or Blu-Ray albums selling by the dozen. If you say that MP3s have trumped CDs in terms of convenience, I'd agree with you.
