Westerns? Let's see...

The Good The Bad and The Ugly, Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, High Noon, The Searchers, Rio Bravo, True Grit (get ya prepped for the Coen version coming out soon), Butch Cassidy, and not so old but Unforgiven is definitely essential too.

^ yeah, it was on instant the other day.
:idk:

also check out Yojimbo; many of those spaghetti westerns were based off of the samurai movies.

Yeah that ones on instant, It sounds pretty interesting from the synopsis.

It's a shame most of the other movies people have recommended aren't on instant.

Something Wild, Body Double, Body Heat, Platoon, Shogun Assasin, Quest for Fire, Uncommon Valor, Shallow Grave, Rivers Edge, and for a laugh - The Decline of Western Civilization Part 2 - The Metal Years

Keep in mind that I have not seen some of these since I was in my teens so YMMV.

What is considered older?

Runaway Train is a pretty killer movie

2010: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket....OK anything by Kubrick except Eyes Wide Shut.

Epic western: Lonesome Dove

Add to this Dr. Strangelove, and then from that, for more George C Scott, watch the 3-4 hour epic that is Patton.
