Way OT - Advice for first time Vegas trip?

Me and the wife will most likely be going to Vegas for several days in late summer/early fall to have a fun trip before we have kids and all that stuff.

Neither of us have ever been, so it seemed logical for me to seek advice from hcfx. Right? Right.

I'm basically looking for good places to stay (leaning toward Caesar's Palace right now) good casinos, shows, museums/attractions, good restaurants, etc. I know that several folks here have been - so what's the best stuff to do?

Okay there are two ways to do the vegas trip:

1) You douche it up. By this I mean you go to the night clubs at night and spend the day by the pool drinking cocktails. Your girl will get into clubs for free you'll pay anywhere from $20-50. Then you'll pay about $14 per drink while talking {censored} about everyone in the club (the sluts, the bros, the dbags, etc...). In the day time you'll eat lunch and gamble a bit. Do the free stuff since you are feeling so assraped by the club experience... watch the fountains at the Bellagio, the animatronic thing at Ceasars and whatever.

2)
You do it right. You show up, you relax, you enjoy a nice meal the first night and have a drink at a nice lounge. The next day you pay for your lady to go get a facial, massage, manicure, etc while you go out and play 18 holes on a nice course. You come back she is relaxed and feeling lovely so you nail her facing out the window of your hotel room. She enjoys this. You do as well. Then you take her to see Love (as pewt said.) It is pricey but worth it, especially if you're into the Beatles. While you're waiting to see love you can sit in the LOVE lounge and have a cocktail. After seeing Love, you're high on life and you can't wait to spend a bunch of money on dinner so you find an awesome steak house (they are easy to find) and you order a cowboy ribeye while she orders something a bit lighter but still containing lobster. A bottle of champagne is in order. Congrats, you're on your way to getting laid twice in one day.

The next day you wake up late, head down to the pool, enjoy some cocktails in the sun while getting a tan. As the day grows late, you enjoy a light lunch, perhaps a nicoise salad. Excellent. Next its time to show your lady you're a classy guy that plays classy games. You head to the Bellagio or perhaps The Venitian and you play CRAPS. If you don't know how, learn. She'll play too, and she'll get to roll the dice and have some fun at a table making/losing money. Enjoy some gaming until its dark, and you take a walk down the strip. (Its not classy, but its your first time so you might as well.) Don't take anything from the mexicans flicking cards at you.

Another dinner, perhaps another show (probably not), cocktails, and you're laid again.

Here comes the important part. Next morning. Leave now. Before you're bored and broke. Just leave. What a nice time you had.

if you want to see the most mind blowing show you will ever witness (at least it was for me), get tickets for Cirque du Soliel "O" at the Belagio Hotel. tickets are pricey but it's worth going to Vegas just to see that show. if you decide to do it, get on it because "I heard" there's a long waiting list for tickets.

Do the Ziplines at Bootleg Canyon.

See the strippers at Spearmint Rhino.

That's all I really liked out there.

Vegas is hot, expensive, and cheesy.

I expected good bars, and a cocktail culture, but it didn't happen. The charm is just non-existent.

If you're not a big gambler, save your money and go to Austin TX, Napa Valley, or San Francisco.

^^ There are some good bars, you just have to leave the strip. But you're right about hot, expensive, and cheesy. Although I have some weird love for the Vegasness of it all.

My favorite casinos are the Venetian and Planet Hollywood. Spectacle-wise, Paris, Luxor, and NYNY are cool. I've stayed all up and down the strip, but now my wife and I pretty much stick to the Venetian. Great casino(s), great rooms, great service.

My girlfriends parents moved to Springdale Utah over by Zion Nat'l Park, so we end up flying in and out of Vegas quite a bit. Vegas is by far my least favorite place to drink, but conversely one of the most enjoyable places to be sober. Being sober, you have the benefit of watching the throngs of morons in the worlds most absurd place making horrible decisions and generally being total douches. Think of it as Disneyland on acid. There are some pretty cool bars way out from the strip where the locals go that are actually enjoyable too.

saw the single best concert of my life in vegas and won a poker tourney with like 50 people, those are the two highlights. other than that, its dirty and super cheesy, not too much interest in going back but def worth a trip if you have never been. ive just reached my limit and done basically all the fun stuff.

a really good city to get spun in tho

and to be serious, the person who said don't stay more than three days is absolutely correct. you'll want to murder people if you stay longer. and try not to go off the strip. it can be a bit dicey.

What about the Freemont Street/old strip area? I would love to go just to set foot in one or two of the old casinos and play a few hands.

And I may have to rethink the timeline - seems like we were overshooting how long we should stay. We were looking at four nights....may need to scale that back a bit.

Thanks for all the input so far djentlemen :thu:

If you're not a golfer, but you're into poker... enter a poker tourney while she is gettin' dolled up.

Touche. I could certainly do that. I imagine that they have sit and go style tourneys for a reasonable buy in?

I need to learn how to play craps as well. I mostly plan on playing Blackjack though - what are typical limits? $5 hands or more?

If I want to seriously gamble for a few hours, how much should I take? I mean, could I enjoy some table games if I only take like $300, or should I start saving and take more?

Craps is fun as hell and you can limit yourself to 10 bucks per play... or go big and have 100 on the table. you should be able to find most table games at about $10 per hand min. off the strip you might find $5 per hand.

the general rule is to have a good time you'll need 20x whatever the minimum bet is. so if its $10 black jack, play with 200.

the poker tourneys are everywhere and cheap... or you can just sit at a no lim table for a long time and get free drinks. that is the most important part about gambling, never turn down the free drink. even if you're only halfway done with the last one.
