Members stikygum
Next up we have the Electro genre. Objective: To create a track that fits in the Electro genre. Most of all, this is for fun and practice and a place for everyone to critique your tune and give you pointers on constructing this genre of music. Take this genre to mean how you interpret it. What defines the electro genre... I usually take it to mean driving synths with a breakbeatish feel. But of course there is lots of sub genres. Here's wiki for clarity: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electro_music I found a cool myspace page with nothing but Electro music on it. If you listen to each track on this page, you'll notice that most tracks have snippets of a full album. So it gives you some comprehension in a short amount of time, allowing you to listen to many different examples. Here: http://www.myspace.com/dominanceelectricity If you guys could post what defines Electro to you and what kind of sounds (maybe more specific here) is incorporated in the building blocks of Electro, that would be helpful and make it easier for others to construct Electro tunes. Here's last week's genre:http://acapella.harmony-central.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2242843

Members stikygum
Does this include Electro House? Sure, why not (Although, I'd personally say those 2 examples are more 'House' music than Electro)
Members Awake77
Sure, why not (Although, I'd personally say those 2 examples are more 'House' music than Electro) I agree, but they call it 'Electro House' still...based on the groove and sounds I'd guess. All the subgeneres for electronic make me sometimes

Members J3RK
This should be fun. I haven't made anything electro-like in some time. I assume this is the more modern electro, rather than late 70s electro-funk? I wouldn't want to approach the latter without a band and a really good vocoder. Members Obsidious
Please, they just stuck electro on the beginning because it was trendy again for some reason. How many different ways can you say house music... Handbag house will always be my favourite.

Members kooki_sf
Please no Electo-House. It's a shame on the electro name. +1, as is the recent trend of guitar folk and hipsters in general referring to any sort of electronic music as "electro". mix coming soon! Members kooki_sf
If you guys could post what defines Electro to you.. it basically boils down to: try to sound like kraftwerk, without actually being kraftwerk.
Members suitandtieguy
+1 for no Electro-House. also, can we disqualify anyone who submits a track describing it as "Electroclash"? and ... this is important ... can i use a TR-909 to make electro? is that possible? Members ElectricPuppy
+1 for no Electro-House. Too many subgenres. "Ooo look at me I'm just like that guy, but slightly different in a profound way!" Feh. also, can we disqualify anyone who submits a track describing it as "Electroclash"? Agreeable. and ... this is important ... can i use a TR-909 to make electro? is that possible? BZZZZZZ!!! Ooooo, sorry, the judges say "no!" why don't you whip out that CR-78 instead? Spacey doodle-yahs: XTk and Motif Solo voice: PEK No effects other than what the synths brought to the table, and some "tube" compression on the final from a Sonar plugin. Critique, please. Dug it. Not really classic B-boy electro, a little too downtempo and not sinister enough, if that makes sense. I think of electro as B-boy music first and foremost, sinister robotic alien funk designed for busting moves to on the lino. This is what sinister breaking roboxenos chill to after the battle. Sorta ambient electro at a hip hop tempo. Cool 808 style beat, bassline is nice and hypnotic, PEK sounds suitably alien and funky doing its thing. The spacey doodle-yahs may sound a bit too bright to my ears, but the notes are nice. Maybe hit it with some sort of tape saturation plug-in to warm it up/soften the sharp edges some? Not sure how effective those are. Very dreamy feel to the track, electroluxe is named perfectly. Hope this doesn't come off as wanky nitpicking, just trying to give you some constructive criticism like you asked. Electro is a genre I have a lot of love for, got at least thirty tracks I could load into this thread once I can record them. Did you write this track in the last couple of days specifically for this thread? If you've got more like this I'd love to hear 'em, very cool. Don't forget there was that "crossover electro" that was slower, smoother, and less kinetic...Hardcastle's "Rainforest" being one of the best examples. Some of the work by "The System" also. Members Obsidious
Just to demo the Kraftwerk influence that kooki sf noted, this was my first run in with electro. Saw this at least 3 times at the flicks, me and my brother were popping and locking like little electric boogaloo freaks for years to come. The music is Tour de France of course. Numbers was also highly influential. Trans-Europe Express is pretty much the progenitor of electro. Which gave rise to Planet Rock (and dozens of imitators, Trans-Europe Express is one of the most heavily sampled tunes in music history) Looking For The Perfect Beat (with bonus dodgy kid attemptin to break) Egyptian Lover Can't forget the Herbsta Cybotron- Clear A classic of the genre, Juan Atkins was the man who coined the term Techno to describe Cybotrons music. So Techno was in actuallity electro at the beginning, the name just got appropriated for Detroits electronic music output somewhere along the way. possibly my fave electro track of all time Another classic For something more modern try Anthony Rother, one of the best live electronic gigs I've ever been to. Shame his music sucks balls these days. I-F, check out Mixed up in the Hague 1+2 for quality Italo Disco. Autechre Aphex Imatran Voima Sorta got carried away there... I actually only spent about 90 minutes on it total, all between the time I wrote "I'm going to write Electrolux" and then posted it. I was just goofing around and this sort of seemed to flow out. It should probably be sped-up. Yeah, it's not very "sinister", that would have to be a different track. This one just wanted to be chillaxin'.
