Members ElectricPuppy
Oh, well, yeah. There's no explaining them. You know what really bugs me though? When I go into Guitar Center and it's filled with guitar dorks who've tried to dial in a piano tone on their Strat knockoff and make pitiful attempts at "Music Box Dancer." I mean, seriously. Just get a keyboard.

Members The Real MC
No one has yet to do keytar as well as Jan Hammer. It's not just the sound; it's the EXPRESSION. Jeff Beck calls Jan his favorite guitar player.
Members asynchro_nous
Yep, I'd much rather hear a guitarist playing through pedals that make him/her sound like a synthesist than vice versa.
Members Gribs
I agree that I always think it is funny and also a little pathetic when keys players try to act like guitar players. For me part of the fun of keys is the "not guitar" part. One of the coolest and I think most thrilling part about listening to an acoustic piano player is to be able to hear and feel their expression through the instrument. As an example I will point to another student of my piano teacher named Elizabeth who I heard play at an adult group lesson last Saturday (all four adult students and our teacher prepared two pieces to play for each other). All the rest of us were amazed at her ability to get controlled soft expression with an incredibly strong but light touch. I mean it was just really impressive how well this woman can control her dynamics and expression of notes out of my teacher's studio piano (a Weber baby grand). I was one of the more junior students there.

Members psionic11
Guitar patches on a rompler are always weak... they are not even close to a real guitar sound alone, nevermind in motion being played like the real thing...
Members aeon
pull up a screamy distorted patch, start shredding and think it "sounds like an electric guitar!" agreed - what is the point of emulating the sound of a paradigm that died 30+ years ago as it concerns timbral evolution? the answer, of course, is when the song in question calls for it. that said, I'd prefer to call up a screamy distorted patch, start shredding and think "damn does this modular portamento lead sound badass!" cheers, Ian

Members Awake77
I have to chime in here. As a synth fanatic *and* a guitar player that fancies himself a 'shredder', I couldnt agree more. I HATE when someone tries to make their synth lead sound like a guitar. A big fat saw lead is SO much more menacing and cooler, especially in a metal context. Case in point, listen to any solo by Kevin Moore. Then listen to any solo by Rudess (on MOST of his DT albums). Kevin Moore's actually sound like he's put some thought into the sound design to make his lead patches unique. Rudess' sound like pure cheese. Members frogmonkey
Yeah, it's pretty silly. OTOH, it is kind of fun to out-wank the wankers. 2-octave pitchbends while doing a trill are a good time with the PEK's "distortion" and "tuned feedback" dialed in. Members angstwulf
at this point any guitar player even using a wah wah makes me Wah is one effect that sounds bad until it sounds good. And there are good wah players out there: Jimi Hendrix? Charlie "Skip" Pitts? [Theme from Shaft] Eddie Hazel? Mick Ronson? Michael Schenker? But yeah, the tendency to make the wah face is too strong for mere mortals to avoid. It's because we communicate with our hands and faces as much as with our mouths. That's why perfectly respectable keyboard players start to bang their heads whenever they have to fill in on a guitar solo. Thank god you can't duck walk with a Motif8. That would be an ugly sight. (I don't look in the mirror, so I don't know.) Am I kicked out of the keyboard club? Maybe I should have been a gee-tar player?
Members soundwave106
no tasteful music exist that would call for such a thing. Much tasteful music calls for distorted synth. Some genres practically live on distorted synth. (Hi, hard acid techno! Hi, industrial music! Hi, drum and bass! Etc.) But not distorted synth that sounds like a guitar. You want distorted synth that sounds like distorted synth.

Am I kicked out of the keyboard club? Maybe I should have been a gee-tar player? Q: How do you know the stage floor is level? A: The drool is coming out of both sides of the synth player's mouth. HELL NO PUPPY!!! I say nay to all those well composed bastards who let their training and talent express themselves. If you don't make a stink face when you solo, then it ain't a solo. If you don't flex your body like you're bench pressing 300 pounds and furrow your brow like a brain surgeon when you turn that cutoff knob, they your filter ain't going to work!!! And when you play Rachmannen...Rakmanino...Rachmeinen...{censored}.. when you play Mozart you better have wild and crazy hair shake!!! !!!! !!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!
