Then you are good. Oh...and age is important. It is best to be old, bitter and jealous. These are the traits of exceptional guitarists...Please make a note of this...Steve

He hardly even plays electric guitar now, mostly playing the acoustic and experimenting with some Indian instruments. The point is that there needs to be a level of maturity reached before one can develop forms of "artistic expression". Yes, there are some 14 year old kids who can play very challanging pieces of music, just as there are 14 year old kids who can paint an almost photographic piece. However, until you're into your mid twenties (unless you're extremely precocious), you simply don't have enough experience of life in order to have something artistic to express. For the same reasons, I dislike the teaching of poetry to young teenagers (as a general principle) - since most of thme will not be able to grasp it's depth. However, if you taught 14 year old's sufficient grammar and vocabulary, by the time they DO have something to say, they're full yequipped with every tool they ned to express it succinctly and beautifully. Same principle with music. Develop the technique early on - then you're equipped, technically, to say whatever it is you need to say. You're like all serious or something, huh?Steve

Members Teleplayer
A friend of mine used to take lessons from Mike Batio (aka Michael Angelo) 25 years ago, when he taught at The Music Gallery in Highwood, IL. He was just as fast and possessed with the speed thing back then as he is now. Sounded the same back then as well.Regarding the kid in the vid - he's 15, cut him some slack. I think he should be proud of learning the song. He will improve with time. He's proven that he is one very determined player. My guess is that he will get better with age. Just think where he'll be when he is 20.

Just think where he'll be when he is 20. At 20 he won't be old enough, bitter enough or jealous enough to be good yet. Give him another 20-25 years or so after he turns 20 and he may have possibilities. As long as he starts to play slow...Steve
Members skipstar59
I'm an old geezer, classic rock dude, and I can't play that shred stuff. I give credit where credit is due. For a 15 yr old the guy CAN do more than most 15 yr. old guitar players. Honestly it really is envy that most at 30,40 or 50 can't do that stuff. You just gotta get over it. Some people are GIFTED musicians and have a natural abitlity to pic up music quickly while others can't. My son just turned 16 in April and is a very gifted musician with WAY more talent than me. He writes, records and plays ALL the instruments on his recordings.Even if he were not my son, I think the stuff he records IS impressive for his age. Here's a link to his music.my son's page

Members guitar shmoe
(coming from an 'insecure old guy').....a few things:1) sounds like he's playing through a Crate practice amp with the gain dimed...2) he's only hitting about 30% of the notes in the arps attempted...3) this video-- is to-- guitar playing....as.....premature ejaculation-- is to-- sex.Hate to slam the kid, but he should get the basics down before trying the 'monster licks'.....I'm more impressed with 'beginning' guitarists putting the emphasis on clean, articulate playing...no matter what style....for those of you that disagree with my opinion to the point of slammin' me: Sorry....
