I would like to see a pre SN500 DR amp to see what the differences are since that is supposely the 'Holy Grail' of the DRs. Members jaeger28
Just checked the Bias on my Marshall VM2266, it was a bit low (40 ish) so I adjusted and on that occasion made some pics.
Members ShortScaleMike
I hope when you took the picture with the master volume set around 1 you weren't messing with the bias and reading it? You're supposed to set the bias to the value you want when the amp is IDLE (i.e. Master volume at 0).
Members ShortScaleMike
I've always been told to bias with master volume at 0.
Members ShortScaleMike
The designer of the Marshall JVM410H posted as much in response to a question on jvm410.com before it became defunct. I don't see why he would have any reason to lie or provide misinformation. Surely it depends on the Amp and the Master Volume used, but it can't hurt can it? Members ShortScaleMike
Nor am I trying to be rude. You didn't address my question, how does it hurt to turn it off? Personally I would set all volumes to zero in a nonMaster/modified amp situation in order to remove any potential noise from the equation.

Members ShortScaleMike
geezuz,I never said it did, my point is you don't have to set a master to zeroto bias an amp. These are two separate circuits. And before you say it, no there's no special "master volume" circuitthat requires you turning it off to bias. Understand now? Why would you suggest that the Marshall designer informed JVM users to set the Master Volume(s) to zero when biasing the amp? "Understand now?" - now you're just acting pompous. I think I'll take the word of the designer of the amp in question over yours thanks. After all, you could equally be providing misinformation. Members jaeger28
I've always been told to bias with master volume at 0. Yeah well, I guess I biased around 0 but might have turned it up and played just to see if it's changing. Strangely the values are changing quite drastically when I read bias on my Bogner Shiva between 0 and up on the Master, but no change whatsoever on the Marshall. Why is it changing on the Shiva, anyone know?
Members jaeger28
Are you hearing any hum with the master turned up?If so, that hum is a signal and it's causing your tubesto conduct. Hmm well possible, all my tube amps hum, at least a bit. But on the Marshall the bias meter doesn't move, even if I play the amp while reading. But on the Shiva, bias might be around 30 with master on "0" and go to sth like 38 when i turn it up half, also changing when I play it. Must be a different design or what ...
