Members Cliff Fiscal
Controling the honk is the key. I have clairty up the ass.honk is mid-range.....thus you'll lose clarity.
Members thefyn
honk is mid-range.....thus you'll lose clarity. Upper mid. I often get JJ pres to get rid of the clairty which borders on harshness. JJ's darken and smooth out the tone nice and tidy.

Members Weathered
Umm....no....JJs are not exclusively AX7s. When he was talking about preamp tubes, however, I'm guessing he meant JJ 12AX7's.FWIW, I'll take a NOS 12AX7 over any 12AT7 in any application that an AX7 is spec'd for. FWIW, I'll take a NOS 12AX7 over any 12AT7 in any application that an AX7 is spec'd for. New tube production is starting to become better and cheaper then NOS. I have yet to play a new tube that sounds like a good NOS Mullard. The JJ's are pretty mediocre, Ei's are good but terribly inconsistent, and don't get me started on Sovtek or EH.New tube production right now is a joke compared to NOS. Members Cliff Fiscal
JJ's are mediocre - I've used them in everything from an '83 JCM800 to an AC30 to my Zinky - they are dark, and they are trying to be Mullards, but just didn't do it for me. What does do it for you?

Members Weathered
What does do it for you? Mullards are great, Amperex Bugle Boys are awesome. If you can get an Ei that works, it sounds great. (Let's hope that since they've been bought out by Western Electric that we'll see some good stuff from them.) Most new stuff just lacks some of the "3D"-ness that a Mullard has. FWIW, I used to be a JJ devotee 3-4 years ago until I started trying out NOS tubes.
