Cabinet

My experience is the cabinet matters most. V30s are still the kings of cut. If a nice set of broken-in V30s are loaded in a solid, well constructed, high quality birch cabinet then it's possible to have the best of both worlds. Solid low end and cut.

So true. I just played last thursday, my cab has V30's and the sound guy said "you're amp is cutting through too much"

If the drummer is playing cymbals that are too loud and middy, and drums that aren't tuned well, you're going to have a hard time sounding good.

Likewise, if the bassist is playing an 8x10 with a middy tone, you're not going to cut through.

If the keyboardist is playing all of his music in the guitar registers, you're not going to cut through.

If everyone does their thing well ( IE, drummers and bassists use a really midscooped sound and keyboardists stick to either background or higher notes ), then almost any decent amp EQed well will cut. Regardless if its set to sound "huge and thick" or "bright and tight".
