So, I know a lot of you guys are fans of firearms. Let's talk about them here.

Right now I've got an itch to build/buy an AR, but with the ridiculously low price of 5.45x39 ammo (cheapest you can get besides .22LR) I'd like to get one compatible with that. Does anyone have experience with this and/or can recommend me a cost effective upper? I've already decided I'd like to go with a New Frontier complete polymer lower.

Btw, feel free to interject with any other general gun discussion if you want.

Honestly there are a lot of good options out there. Smith and Wesson and Olympic make some well priced uppers in that caliber, I'd prefer the Olympic over the S&W though because I have more experience with them. In my experience, I am not a fan of polymer lowers. As far as 5.45x39 goes, I haven't shot much of it but I prefer 5.56 and I usually reload it for about 7 cents per round.

I'd also stay away from a polymer lower. On pistols, I'm a fine with it as they are smaller and don't have some of the forces that rifles will have on them.

Want cheap shooting? Get an AR upper in 5.56 and then get a .22 conversion kit or a dedicated .22 upper.

I've read that it's quite similar to the .223 round though. And at about $75+ less per 1000 rounds, it's quite appealing. It's even way cheaper to shoot than my 9mm too.

5.56, especially in a crenelated bullet like a standard M193 ball round is exceptionally deadly inside its fragmentation envelope because it rips in half at the crenelation when the bullet hits. As far as I know the russian round doesn't do this in real world conditions. It's a function of bullet design and velocity.

If you're looking to get a platform that shoots russian ammo just get a nice AK. Vector arms or some such.

With the modular capabilities of the platform, get an upper in all the flavors out there. It is fun to have the options.

Cost aside, the BC of the 6.5mm rounds is amazing. Amazing what you can get out of those rounds--either the Grendel or the Creedmore.

You're right, but I'm just not a fan of AKs. Also, I'm not trying to kill people. I just want to have fun shooting my rifle. I think it's odd that people put so much emphasis on how deadly a round is when, for the most part, they're just shooting paper targets in the backyard.

Yeah, I've thought about that. My friend had a GSG MP-5 copy that was .22, but it's just not that fun to shoot.
I still want to feel like I'm shooting a real gun and have the capability to blow stuff away
. Also, does the lower really receive that much force? I feel like most of that should be dealt with in the upper? Besides, I've seen some torture tests on the new polymer lowers, as well as seemingly all positive reviews. All signs point to them being pretty solid.

Well, if you don't have a .22 and are new to rifles, it's the best way to learn, especially if you are just interested in shooting paper targets in the backyard.

The lower doesn't take as much stress from firing. Since it's the part that has the serial number, that's the part I'd want to make sure lasts the longest. Some excessive force like a drop or twist that breaks the pin lockup or damages the fire control group on a lower and its nothing more than a hunk of plastic. Cheap plastics can get brittle with age and weaken over time. Until one of these plastic lower manufacturers have some long term trials, I'm hesitant to buy. Most are made to be cheap and most of the time, you get what you pay for.

Honesty, I only keep my AR around because it's the weapons platform I've got literally millions of rounds through so I shoot it well, and in the event I ever needed to defend myself it'd be the first thing I grabbed. I've seen the effects of society coming un-knitted in a few places and having a way to feed/protect yourself is never a bad thing. An AR is a great platform for a huge variety of stuff.

I own a couple of handguns, an AR, a shotgun, and a bolt action .308. I don't gas for anything.

Yeah, I kind of feel the same way. I think once I get a nice AR, pump shot gun, tac vest and a bunch of mags I should be set for my gun needs. I already got my dream hand gun. I'll probably get something for CCW later on if I decide to carry.

Gunz, lol

I know a lot of guys up here do that with their ARs since surplus .30 short is just about the cheapest centrefire ammo you can get up here by a long shot (hehe). Of course given that we can only have 5 rounds in our AR mags, most of em just say screw it and get an SKS

I'm sure you're right, but then again you'll always have people with the "way to bump a 2 year old thread" thing.

Honestly man I'd stay away from 5.45x39 for any type of AR. If you want that round I'd just get an AK-74 or something. Not to mention a lot of the cheap 5.45 is corrosive which I don't mind so much in Russian guns but would not ever put it in anything like an AR. Also I think you'd have a harder time finding ammo locally.

So my recommendation is a Spikes Tactical lower and a Bravo Company upper in 5.56. Or just say F it and get one of these. :D You won't be disappointed.

You can get them you just have to have your stock pinned so it can't be adjusted, use 10 round mags, and install a bullet button.

What's a bullet button? Man, I love the south. It's not amazing down here, but we sure do have some liberal gun laws. I think I might buy some 33 round mags for my Glock to celebrate. Speaking of which, anyone know a good place/ brand to buy?

A bullet button makes it so you can't drop a mag free by pushing a release like on normal guns. It makes it so it requires a tool or a bullet tip to drop the mag free.

I check slickguns.com a lot for good deals on whatever I'm looking for. I buy from budsgunshop.com , cheaperthandirt.com and brownells.com the most. Botachtactical.com has great prices on whatever they have but they have a tendency to sell {censored} they don't actually have in stock and then tell you 5 days later that it'll be 3 weeks or something.

Hey guys. FOA, {censored} yeah, firearms FTMFW!!! LOL I've posted on many of the various firearms threads that have been posted on HCAF.

OP - FOA, I must say that in this particular case, though I have heard of it, I really am not that familiar with the 5.45x39 round, and have never put one down range or known anyone who has.

If the cost of ammo is your main concern, I would definitey advise you to go for an SKS or AK chambered in 7.62x39, it's WAY WAY WAY more common and available, and can be modified into quite a tactical little thing (stocks, sights, grips, collapsing buttstocks, 40 rd mags, etc etc....) AND while it's true that you can get 1080 rounds of 5.45x39 shipped to your door for $150 or so, you can get 1280 rounds of 7.62x39mm shipped to your door for $230 (I just checked aimsurplus.com and that's what it was for 5.45x39, I didn't bother to check the 7.62x39 cuz my brother has an SKS and I know for a fact that he paid that not to long ago, I forget what site it was from....

So long story short, is it more expensive? Yes, but not to the point where the availability and versatility of it rules it out completely...However, if you really are hankering for an AR, just do it, and hook it up chambered for either .223/5.56x45NATO or 6.8....yes the ammo is much more expensive than the 5.45x39, but I think in the long run you will be a lot happier.
