Members soundgardener75
Some of the grunge wannabes and nu metal bands were doing that. Solos have their place, and just like everything else, overuse brings disastrous results, hence the "wankfest" terminology.Depends on the band I suppose. Members peavey_impact
Whenever I hear some {censored} like its usually from someone who can't play lead and is trying to justify it to themselves. this
Members Cibyl
For {censored} sake. Depends on the type of music, the particular song, context, etc, etc. Oh, tell your friend to stfu.
Members koen77
come on, could you imagine the guns 'n roses classics without the solos ? And the excellent "wankery" of Brian May ? I agree that most memorable solos are not played a million miles per hour, but some just lift the song to another level. My last VCR was stolen, ik kinda think Borat has it now.... GREAT SUCCES ! Members Nick H
I think guitar solos are more like vynils, they are pretty old fashioned, but not necissarily out of style. Like others said, solos can be a huge part of the song, or not, depends on the song/solo/band.
Members Jesse G
Disagree, of course. Apparently your friend has missed the last 10 years of rock music

Solos are all over the place now, did your friend go to prison while nu metal was big and just get out or something?
