I wrote this in August.

"She Cries"

That was tres cool, 99. That's a sweet little song, and intriguing--would like to know the back-story on the lyrics of that one. Your new Tak sounds (and looks) fabulous. Don't know what you record audio with, but vocals and guit were really clear and full-sounding.

Back on VOM after a brief hiatus. Here's my take on an old standard, Georgia On My Mind, hope you all like it...

Wow. That was pretty dazzling. You make it look so effortless! :thu: I was all set for the dreamy/melancholy tempo I associate with that song but that was refreshingly perky and happy. And as an expat Georgia boy, I've always had a special place in my heart for that song. Sweetly done.

Thanks Michael, I really dig you song also, you get a great sound out of your guitar, and I like the story narrative of the song.

Yeah, I used to play Georgia in the more usual way for years, lately I've been experimenting with playing it with a kind of latin/caribbean/calypso type groove, here's the results. It is definitely more work keeping it smooth and flowing but I like it when it comes off well.

Tbryson and rougue

Loved both Beatles renditions. Rougue your adabtion of the number made it specially memorable.

Garthman :thu: I'll have to look at trying that one myself.

'Track1. I've never heard that before. I like that kind of picking but can't do it myself. The only Doc Watson I do at the moment is Deep River Blues.

Sorry to the rest of the absentee posters - I'm having problems with YouTube at the moment.

Micheal I listening to 11 days at the moment. Enjoying it - its just started again.

I'll be listening some more.

tbryson: I do dig that song! The harmonies make me appreciate the genius of the Beatles as vocal arrangers--or maybe that was George Martin? Always liked the majory-minory shifts in that one too. Enjoyed your vocal layerings--I've tried that but never can make it work. It did seem that overall, the vocal volume should increase relative to the guitar.

Garth: Funny, I just downloaded lyrics for that one a month or so ago with the intention of learning it (but haven't yet). Good to hear your version, because you really changed it from the original's spooky/smoky languor...I once saw a movie where that song was the soundtrack for a seduction scene in a dimly-lit room (I forgot everything else about the movie), and ever since I associate it with eroticism. But I like your sped-up version too.

Gnome: Intricate! Great song to make into an instrumental, as the potency of it has always (for me) been the the music with the lyrics kind of...well, George wasn't much of a lyricist, IMO. And your version reminds me of how much I like the acoustic version that I first heard on the Anthology CD. Despite all the slick production on the original White Album version, and Clapton's solos, I thought the very spare acoustic take on it was much closer to the heart of the song.

CC: That's a very warm-hearted song--what a great tribute to the communitarian spirit of a music circle. Lovely new guitar too--would like to play one of those sometime.

RT1: Great old song, extremely well-played/sung. Your vocals perfect for this kind of song, and potent flatpicking! Indeed the guitar sound is bright and sparkly, but not too much so--very distinctive.

gthom: Always appreciate your technique. Very fluid on this one--you seem really familiar with it. Cool percussion too. And nice "noir" videography this time! And are those cicadas that swell up here and there in the background? If so you have them well-trained!

BTW, did you change recording methods? That was crystal clear.

Thanks!

No I didn't change anything except I got over my fear of eating the mic and singing out. After 40 years making other people sound good I finally figured out that if I wanted my vocal to be heard it was me that had to get up close to the mic.

I guitar is the HD-35 K&K DI. No close mic on the guitar.

I did the usual in the mix.

This is a clip of a backing rhythm I'm working on. I just got one of those Zoom H4 recorders. This is the first thing I recorded with it. The guitar is a Goodall RCJC using a K&K PWM straight into a Fender Acoustasonic. The effects are turned to Reverb Chorus with the gain at 2 and amp volume set at 3. The H4 was set on a table about a foot away from the amp. The H4 captured it pretty much as it is. I'm using fingernails and a Fred Kelly yellow (Delrin) Speed Pick thumbpick. The H4 is the way to go from now on for me.

Beautiful sound - I must look at the zoom H4 - but the player must have something to do with it:thu:

Here's my version of Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye, written by John D. Loudermilk, and done by The Casino's about 40 years ago. Please be advised that there are no mistakes in the song. What you hear in the middle is a meticulously planned solo. VOM1T indeed. Anyway, here it is:

Thanks in advance for those who dare to listen. I'm listening to a few now and will be back later to listen to the rest.

Wow - brilliant guitar and what a voice. What do you use to record with? I'm listening to this one again right now.

RogueGnome: Very cool.:thu:
Garthman: Old Stones is great! Reminds me of middle school dances. Love it. The Crafter sounds great! ;)
recordingtrack1: Smooth and swingin'. Nice!:thu:
gthom: Sweet. That Brazilian jazz (I'm sure there's a specific name for it, but I'm clueless) mesmerizes me.
MM: Your songs are so freely written and open. Very inspirational. Thanks!
Fussenkuh: Scores again. You make it look so easy, and that EPI sounds FANTASTIC.
Stack: What can I say. You brought a little tear to the corner of my eye.
Brian: Very impressive!:thu: Great production. Beautiful song. What else needs be said.
Melodious: Beautiful! Can't wait to see where it goes!
fatback: Nice job on the harp, and I think you were singing and playing guitar, but I couldn't really hear it. Remix that sucka!
busby99: That song reminds me of the guys out on the street at night in my old neighborhood when I was a kid, singing under the streetlamp. Nice job!:thu:
Frets99: Great song! I felt like I wanted to hear another verse at the end. Just a thought.
Gil: I watched this when you originally posted it. Great job on a tough song under dubious circumstances.:thu:
riovine: Awesome! You are one of the talents that humbles me the most around here. You make it look effortless. Thanks

This is a song that I wrote when I was about 19 (a loooooooooong time ago). I could never quite come up with a good guitar rhythm or melody for it though. Over the past few months I was messing around with it and came up with this. It still needs a bridge, so I just threw a little rhythm part in the middle.

The song is about an insecure phase that I was going through (at the time). I had come out of a bad relationship and was seeing another girl. When she told me she loved me, I started thinking that she just thought she loved me and it would turn out bad like my last relationship.

I don't have a name for it yet, but I think I'm gonna name it... "Insecurity"

Hope you like it...

Thanks I think I will. The guitar and singing were off of one mic single take so now I have the harp I'll re-record the singing and guitar separately.

My entry for this month is a cover of "That lonesome song" by Jamey Johnson. Man, I love that guy's songwriting.

Guitar used is a T-style I put together recently. Shell pink, relic, Fender MIM neck, relic'ed hardware and a set of Seymour Duncan Antiquity pickups.

Amp was a Swart AST w/ the built-in reverb and trem on.

Pic of the guitar:

I look forward to listening to all the entries this afternoon!

Thanks again to all who work to make this possible. What fun it is

Here is my selection for this VOM. I got an H2 the other day and took it to one of my Sunday jams. Certainly surprised how well the thing works! This is definitely a VOMIT! Not too great
Tower of Song-Myself and a few other guitarists and Miss Amie Reaves on mandolin

Michael Martin
beautiful original. You could have recorded that song on the cheapest guitar using the cheapest mic, and with a cheap cassette recorder, and it would have sounded just as beautiful... nice job.

FussenKuh
Great job. I like how you showed both parts like that. Very cool.

Stackabones
That is awesome. It's the best feeling to get inspired and come up with songs like this. Ain't it? Awesome man, just awesome.

brianwahl
Very nice original. You got skills dude.

Melodeous
Very nice work. Sounds like you got it down brotha...:)

fatback
Very enjoyable and cool as all hell.

I'll be listening to some more later. Great posts so far everyone.

Greetings

So this month's song is my newest one, titled Angels Aflight.

A good friend of mine, Paul Schobernd passed away a couple of weeks ago. Paul was a long time acoustic guitar player, as well as the mandolin and the mountain dulcimer. He also was maker of dulcimers as well. Paul was one of my fans from the start when I started playing guitar again. He was one of the folks that always got a copy of my newest recordings, but he always first in line so to speak when I'd get a CD out as well. He also enjoyed watching these video's every month. I was going to do something a little more quieter this month but he always liked when I kicked it up a notch. So Paul, this one is for you.
