Hey i've been gassin for a P-90 axe for a while... i think i'm going to get one pretty soon... I would like opinoins.. i really like the look and feel of the PRS soapy but i've played and it seems too smooth for a p-90 guitar i want something a little more beligerant! Epi goldtop is a choice. i have one carved to lp with hums already. i'd like a jr/special type guitar. i really like the AMPEG amg 1 also. it looks tight, but no purple top! they are few and far between though...

I'm kinda going for a social distortion type sound and a humbucker can come close but not quite all the way... i play mostly rock, blues, etc.

i've thought godin too, but i just don't know about it, can't play one in person... only if epi still made a set neck jr or special with p-90's

anything i'm overlooking please help me out... thanks !

What's your budget? I was going to recommend this but it might be too much: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=guitar/search/detail/base_pid/517512/

It's cheap for a Gibson, and since you're mostly a rock/blues player I think you'd love it. Really ballsy when the amps cooking, and a beautiful Strat-style clean tone when you flip both pickups on. I've owned an SG Special, LP Standard and SG Standard, a couple of good Strat copies and I must say this one is the most versatile and has the most consistantly great tone that cuts well in a band mix.

If it wasn't a sin I'd probably marry it. It won't cook the dinner but it won't answer back either. :D

I have played the gibson les paul special faded double cut (damn thats a long name), its actualy a nice guitar, and I will probably buy it eventualy.... but like any guitar go to the store and try a bunch, check the necks and fit and finish, the one I played was setup very well, the fretwork was good, and it had a nice tone, though I am sure theres some less than stellar ones out there, but this one is worth saving for, and if you end up not being satisfied it would have a better resale than those MIK guitars

The Godin LGs are nice. Nice and resonant with the string through.

The only complaint is they come with 250kohm pots, which make them a little dead in the store. Put in 500kohms, and the whole guitar comes alive. A rock monster.

For the money, I like the PRS Soapbar hands down. You can get the PRS new for $400. Unfortunately, It seems to sell used on EBay for at least that - often more. It's kind of nuts, really.

For $500-$650 you can get a nice used Hamer Special with a HSC.

The Godin LG-SP90 is nice too. But I only like finishes where I can see the wood and Godin just doesn't seem to care about matching the three pieces they use for the body.

I believe they all have Duncan pickups. They all sound great to me.

Then there's the Music Man Axis. I picked up my Axis Sport MM-90 for $600 on EBay. A 3-pickup one just went for $575. That's the solid ash version, not the figured maple "Super Sport."

I went through this process last year there are a whole pile of nice P-90 guitars Ones I tried and liked include:

Epi: '56 Goldtop R.I, Casino, Wildkat

Gibson: LP Faded Special DC, Les Paul Special DC (discontinued in 1998)

Fender: TC-90

Dean: EVO-60

Ampeg: AMG-1

Godin: LG-90

Each has its own sound and each can be very good. In the end, I broke the bank and got a '95 Gibson LP Special Double Cut which was, IMO, absolutely the best sounding and best playing of the bunch.

I pretty much would rank the rest of them in about the same order that I have listed them. I may be a bit strange, but I like the Epi P-90s better than the Duncans.

For what it's worth, the Gibson Faded Doublecuts sound great. Like many of the Gibson Faded, the Fret ends can be a bit rough, but they are better than what I have experienced on the Faded SGs. THe best price I got on one was $590 from E.M. Shorts. These guys are great and have fine techs on premesis. They will inspect the guitar for you and they can polish the fret ends since they are official Gibson repair shop.

I have pricedseveral guitars and amps and E.M. Shorts consistently gives me the best quote. They also sell Fender, Epi, and PRS. Check them out:

In my mind there's no other choice (unless you've got big bucks to spend)

You go with the "real deal" (or at least a "MF exclusive" reissue version of the real deal :D )

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=home/search/detail/base_pid/517341/

And of course if you had the scratch you'd go for this: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=home/search/detail/base_pid/517054/

Or you could go with a USA Kramer Korina version.

Now please note that on the first one, that is a one week deal only offer. If you add the HCRD coupon code you'll get another $25 off and get the guitar for $575. They were selling these for at least a year at $750. Then they put them "on sale" for $650, then they called it a "new lower price" at $650 and now they have this "one week only sale" at $599.99. With the additonal $25 off, I doubt you can do better new.

I bought one a few months back and I'm very happy with it.

To me, P-90 just says "Gibson Les Paul Junior". But I have to admit, the PRS Soapbar looks very tempting and the reviews seem to be good.

Now if you are on a budget mission, try this http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=guitar/search/detail/base_id/110929

Now you'll see the price came up as $229.99, but in my last shipment received form MF 2 days ago, they have this guitar advertised in an insert flyer for $179.99. You wold have to tell them you got it from source code "508T" to get the price.

Happy hunt

i think you should order one of the soapbar se 2's from mf, youll probably be pleasently suprised, great tone, great feel, flawless workmanship, honestly this easily one of the top 5 guitars in the under $500 price range. If you dont like it just send it back:D

I really do think I would like it. But I've already got a Gibson Les Paul Junior Special w P-100s and the Gibson Les Paul Junior w the one P-90, so I'm fairly maxed out in the P-90 tone/vibe category. But I have spent a fair amount of time staring at them in the catalog. They are the only PRS SE that gets me excited.

I wonder why they dropped the SE Tremonti? That was a popular economy PRS as well.

I got the SE Soapbar II for $449 and thought that it was a much better deal than the faded Gibson LP Jr Special that cost me almost $700. The P-90's sound just like the Gibson ones to me. In fact the two guitars were so similar that I decided to put SD P-90 stacks in the Gibson, just to be able to tell them apart.

But I've heard from other people who recommend changing the P-90's, usually with some of the higher gain SD varieties.

It seems like everybody has their own ideal P-90 sound in mind... for me it has always been the Mike Bloomfield goldtop, which he used on the first two Butterfield albums before swapping LP's w/ Dan Erlewine. (I do believe that he was using his tele for slide guitar on those albums.)
