P90 pickups

OK, the stock Epi pups in my Gold Top are quite superb....lets get that straight.........rich, raucous and full, but I'm getting slightly irked by the noise especially with the AC30....OK.......P90 purists need not answer:cool:

Duncan Stack P90s........hum free and still very P90ish or not right at all?

I've also come across a company called SD, and some of the reviews for these highlight that its not neccessary to go down the stack route to get quieter P90s, that some of the modern P90s are lovely and quiet....and while not able to carry off the full delta blues thang are still a good pups for octane type bluesy rocky dirty nasty type stuff.

Discuss:rolleyes:

I haven't found a stack P-90 yet that have the same aggresive "gnarly" overdriven sound as a real P-90. I just believe too man harmonics and too-much of the pickups "hairy" nature" is also cancelled with the hum. But, much of the pickup remains the same, it sound sound pretty much as rich and full, but you'll lose a noticeable amount of the raucous.

However, it's up to you to find the right balance for your music; if you just can't take the hum, then you'll have to make some sort of compromise to get into a middle ground. You'll have to sacrifice some of the P-90's nature to gain hum-free performance. To some people (like myself) will take the raw and raucous nature of the P-90 and just turn the volume down between sets; others just can't get past the noise. I don't think either opinion is wrong, just different.

The only way to get a p-90 sound is with a p-90 :) Stacked p-90's (P-100'S) don't really come close, but I hear if you can split the coil they sound much more P-90 like. I turn the distortion way down on my DS-1 when I play my bastardcaster (p-90 mod on a tele) and it's not that noisy. It gives a good crunch and with some know tweaking I can get a large variety of sounds. I also love how dynamic they are with strumming. My LP JR had p-100's and the bridge pup was very dull. I loved it in the neck position though.

Everytime I have ever compared Gibson P-90s to the Duncan varieties, the Gibsons won - handily. I think the Epiphone variety are pretty fine. I had a Wildkat that sounded great and I think that the '56 Goldtop and the Casino are terrific sounding. I have played the Duncans in a Fender TC-90 and a Godin LG-90 and found them lacking.

Harmonic Design VP-90s are very quiet as P-90s go. They also sound great - to me.

Stacked pickups always seem to sound kind of bleh to me. Dimarzio also makes a "Virtual P-90" in a side-by-side, P-90 sized HB. I would figure that to be as diasppointing as Duncan's or Gibson's stacked ones. But I haven't heard them.

How about a HB in a P-90 package? The Dimarzio DLX is a regular, side-by-side humbucker, not stacked. I think they're targeting a mini HB sound.

One of the most disappointing guitars I've ever played. And I wanted one so bad until I tried it.

Do any of you have the new guitar world mag. They have these new AXL Mayhem guitars. They have one called the Jacknife. Its an EMG P-90 loaded V type guitar. The tone on the cd is killer. I think emg designed them for these guitars but they should make this one as an aftermarket pu. I really sounds killer. Its just ripping with killer string definition

Wow, really? You must have tried a dud; I've got the Godin LG P90, and it is one sweeeeeeet axe! And, I bought the very first one I saw - it was perfect! (well, apart from a dicky volume know, but many guitars have that problem). The SDs on my Godin are wonderful - these Godins beat the PRS P90 guitars hands down.

I have to say I wasn't totally over the moon with the LG at first, but since I discovered the volume knob is really a huge tone-control, and the guitar now feels played in, I love it. Can't leave it alone :thu:

volume 'knob' I meant :o

but yes, I agree,... they need to be played in a bit before they start to shine.

The bark of the SDs is just wonderful.:
